Director Neill Blomkamp's potential Alien 5 has been dead for awhile, but the star best associated with the franchise had some kind words to say about the abandoned project.

The film had never officially reached the casting stage, but Sigourney Weaver spoke about what might have been. "We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron," Weaver told The Hollywood Reporter at the Rome Film Fest, in reference to her work with Cameron on Avatar. "But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we’d have to wait probably."

"I’m busy doing Avatar 4 and 5," Weaver added. "I love working with Neill and I think he’d do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it’s a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill’s got like three projects going at once."

Blomkamp's treatment was reportedly intended to be a direct sequel to Cameron's Aliens, ignoring the subsequent Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection films. In that time, though, the franchise has seen the release of Ridley Scott's tie-in film Prometheus, as well as its sequel, Alien: Covenant.

Blomkamp is best known for directing 2009's District 9, and 2013's Elysium. Blomkamp also directed 2015's sci-fi action thriller Chappie, which starred Weaver.
