Despicable Me co-director Chris Meledandri has been tapped to oversee reboots of Shrek and Puss in Boots for Universal Pictures. The newest entry in the franchise has been in development for years, and will reportedly be a new take on the material.

However, it doesn’t appear to be a full-blown revamp of the series, as Meledandri told Variety he wants to bring back the original voice cast, which included Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews and John Cleese. “While you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations.," he said.

Meledandri also explained that the main objective with the film is to find something fresh for the characters to deal with. "The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels," he said.

The 12th highest-grossing franchise in cinematic history, Shrek has produced four films, two television specials, a Broadway musical and an entire spinoff series centered around the character Puss in Boots, voiced by Banderas.
