With the start of a new decade upon us, it seems like a good time to look back and reflect on the anime that shaped the 2010s, specifically shounen anime. It was a stellar decade for shounen, which saw countless new shows produced and one could argue that the 2010s was something of a golden age for this genre of anime.

With so many shounen to choose from over the years, which ones are the best? Let's take a look, with a little help from the rating system of IMDb. Here's the 10 best shounen anime of the decade, ranked according to IMDb.

10 Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (8.4)

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has been a highly influential manga in Japan since it began back in the 1980s and has shaped, in one way or another, almost every shounen since, so it's no surprise that the anime adaptation that began in 2012 has found its way onto this list.

Jojo follows the Joestar bloodline over generations in their unending battle against the forces of evil. Jojo is both widely well-known but somehow underrated. Most people who have never seen the series can at least say they've seen a Jojo meme (something the series is famous for spawning) but it has a passionate fan base that keeps coming back for more.

9 Mob Psycho 100 (8.5)

Nobody does extremely overpowered characters like ONE, the mind behind One-Punch Man and this entry, Mob Psycho 100. Both series center on individuals with immeasurable power that can defeat enemies without breaking a sweat, but both still manage to tell wonderfully captivating stories.

Mob Psycho 100 centers on Mob, a middle schooler with crazy strong psychic abilities, but all he wants is to be seen as cool to his crush. As the series progresses, Mob learns to be more confident and in touch with his repressed emotions. It's a heartfelt coming of age story that many consider better than OPM but IMDb's rating lands it at the number 9 slot.

8 My Hero Academia (8.5)

My Hero Academia is the answer to the question, "What do you get when you mix western superheroes with anime?" My Hero Academia is a 2016 anime that follows young Izuku Midoriya as he attends a school for prospective superheroes on his path to become the number 1 hero.

My Hero has every reason to be on this list. Memorable characters, a great story, and a fresh take on the superhero genre has made My Hero Academia one of the most popular and beloved anime of the decade, and it wasn't even released until the second half of the decade. This series has a long life in it yet and will be talked about well into the new decade.

7 Hajime No Ippo: Rising (8.7)

Of all the anime that made it onto this list, none can be considered an underdog as much as Hajime no Ippo: RisingRising is the latest in the Hajime no Ippo series and one of its best installments, continuing Ippo's quest to grow stronger as he takes on a new set of challengers vying for his title of the Japanese Featherweight champion.

Rising, and the whole Hajime no Ippo series for that matter, is something of a sleeper hit and goes under many shounen fans' radars, but it certainly not one to be missed. The series has great action, especially for fans of boxing, but it's the focus on character development that puts this series on another level.

6 One-Punch Man (8.8)

The other of ONE's hit series, One-Punch Man follows the hilarious misadventures of Saitama, a hero for fun that has become so powerful, he has gone bald and can defeat any opponent in a single punch, a quality that has also made him a bit jaded.

While One-Punch Man is certainly a parody of the superhero genre, it's also a love letter to it. Though it suffered a bit in its second season, it's jam-packed with laughs and action and remains one of the best that shounen has to offer.

5 The Promised Neverland (8.8)

Characters from The Promised Neverland.

The Promised Neverland is an interesting series to categorize. It's a thriller, mystery, supernatural horror, and shounen all blended into one, and that's what makes it so great. The series follows a trio of orphans plotting to escape their orphanage after they discover that their home is actually a farm in which children are harvested for demons.

The Promised Neverland is distinctly different than your typical shounen anime, in fact, it often doesn't feel like you're watching a shounen at all. It's more a battle of the minds than a battle of brawn and filled with amazing schemes and twists that will leave you reeling.

4 Attack On Titan (8.8)

It seems none of us were truly ready for the impact Attack on Titan had on not only the shounen genre but on the whole anime landscape. With the last remnants of humanity living in fear from man-eating giants behind massive walls of concrete, Attack on Titan centers on Eren Yeager, a soldier who dreams of seeing the world outside the walls.

Attack on Titan is so much more than battling grotesque giants. It spins a tale of oppression, corruption, facing adversity, and political espionage, all set in the backdrop of a conflict pitting humanity and titans. Even with the series' final season is approaching, Attack on Titan will not be soon forgotten.

3 Demon Slayer (8.9)

One of the breakout hits of 2019, Demon Slayer quickly rose the ranks to near the top of this list. The series follows Tanjiro Kamado who joins the Demon Slaying Core to hunt down the demon that killed his family and turned his sister into a demon.

Demon Slayer has quite a few shounen tropes but it does them so well that it feels fresh, and the exceptional animation from Ufotable is the cherry on top. Needless to say, we're very excited about what Demon Slayer has in store for us in the new decade.

2 Hunter x Hunter (8.9)

Widely regarded by fans as a masterpiece of a shounen, Hunter x Hunter does nearly everything right. It has complex and layered characters, deep worldbuilding, well-written story arcs, and arguably the most detailed and nuanced power systems in anime.

The series follows a young hunter named Gon who sets out in search of his absentee father, but this is a story more about the journey than the destination, and the characters go through major character growths. If you haven't seen Hunter x Hunter yet, you're truly missing out on one of the best anime ever made.

1 Vinland Saga (9)

Like Demon SlayerVinland Saga has become one of 2019's breakout hits. The more we think about Vinland Saga, the more we're left wondering why it took so long to make an epic anime about Vikings; however, we couldn't be happier that it's here.

Vinland Saga centers on a young Viking named Thorfinn, who joins up with the mercenary band that killed his father in order to become strong enough to take revenge and kill the leader of the mercenaries. This is one of the more gritty and mature anime on this list, but it rightfully deserves the top slot on our list according to IMDb. The anime has only scratched the surface of its story (the entire first season was just the prologue), but we can't wait for what Vinland Saga has in store.
