The 2000s were an amazing time for anime. A lot of iconic titles that actually held tons of influence of what we're seeing on the market started during this time, many that are now household names. However just as there are overlooked anime now, there were just as many back then.

While some anime prove extremely popular, others are sadly underappreciated, and the 2000s is chock full of those. Many great anime shows were created during this period and sadly many got lost under the crevice. This list will hopefully show what you should be checking out and what you maybe should skip over.

Gainax's Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is recognized as one of the most hype anime out there. It's the anime that led to the creation of the famed anime studio, Studio Trigger, which is known for crafting anime with a unique action-packed style. Sadly, this studio isn't just associated with style but also for the occasional half-baked plot.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann isn't free of this Trigger curse. Due to having a rather predictable plot that focuses mainly on hype moments, it ends up being an anime that is mostly only good for one go through. This can lead to viewers expecting something more out of their mecha anime, getting bored when things are supposed to be ramping up. Gurren Lagann's popularity might have also played a part in Trigger's later shows frequently trying to repeat the same formula, space battles and all.

9 OVERLOOKED: MÄR

MÄR is one of the many anime some people may be familiar with due to its run on the popular Cartoon Network block, Toonami. This anime is an early example of an isekai series and one of the most entertaining of the genre. The main character Ginta is transported into a fantasy world he's been dreaming of and takes up ARMS (literally, ARMS are the weapons in this series) as the main character.

It's a series full of sick action, great characters, creative weapons, and of course, the obligatory tournament saga.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is truly a product of its time and somewhat of an influential anime. It's about a weird girl obsessed with the extraterrestrial, the paranormal, time travelers, espers, and everything else of the sort. She starts a club based around these things and together with her club hijinks ensue. However, everything isn't as it seems.

While Haruhi Suzumiya has a few secrets beneath the surface of normality initially presented, for the most part, it sticks to most of the average tropes seen in slice of life anime, tropes that have been beaten into the ground partly because Haruhi was so popular.

7 OVERLOOKED: HISTORY'S STRONGEST DISCIPLE KENICHI

For those wanting a good old fashioned tale of the underdog growing up to be a martial arts master, then History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is an anime that should be watched. It's the story of a bullied kid that ends up in over his head and is taught by some of the best martial artists in history.

Sounds basic until Kenichi's new life ends up having him fighting whole organizations and your usual elite group of bosses in shonen. There's also a lot of good looking characters and humor.

fma 2003

Why you would ever decide to watch the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime over the superior Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? For those thinking that the original series is some kind of prequel, you're very mistaken. Both series are adapting the same material from the manga source, however, one does it much better than the other.

Fullmetal Alchemist feels like a prototype compared to its brother anime. It's full of filler during the slowest arc in the series and it's nowhere as polished. While that cannot be blamed on the creators, there is no reason to go back to Fullmetal Alchemist.

5 OVERLOOKED: GRAPPLER BAKI

In Japan, the anime series Baki: The Grappler is recognized among the ranks of legendary series such as One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Naruto. That's nowhere near the case in the States, as the series just recently caught the hype train due to a deal with Netflix to release the new series continuation simply titled Baki stateside.

It's a shame too because, while it may have some questionable animation, the original Baki anime was amazing. It was a very faithful adaptation of its original manga and covered both Baki's childhood as well as the Maxim Tournament arcs.

The Naruto series is as popular as anime come and follows somewhat of an original concept due to the setting and the plot elements it uses. Naruto was a very hyped anime when first released in Japan and the hype carried over to America via Toonami and any other station that got its hands on it. Sadly, the sequel couldn't keep that momentum going.

A solid amount of fans regard Naruto's sequel series Naruto Shippuden as a step-down and believe that a sequel to this hit series could have been handled better. This sequel was full of missteps that some even compare to the mistakes of Dragon Ball GT and Super. The series is plagued with tons of filler such as flashbacks every few minutes, long fights that simply serve as filler, villains with interesting powers instead of personalities, and flat characters.

3 OVERLOOKED: KINNIKUMAN NISEI

We've talked about how the shounen wrestling series Kinnikuman is a very underrated anime over here in the States, but what about its sequel that actually got brought over along with an English dub of its own? Enter Kinnikuman Nisei, known in the US as Ultimate Muscle. A series that follows in its prequel's footsteps with a twist of its own.

Kinnikuman Nisei is the story of the generation after the original characters of the Kinnikuman series. It does everything that Kinnikuman did just as well and is downplayed due to the changes 4kids made to the series. Highly recommended as long as you watch the unaltered version.

The story of Bleach is a sad one because its fall from grace wasn't due to just a writer making a few mistakes with the series, but the meddling of corporations trying to push out more of a product. Bleach debuted as a juggernaut of a new age of manga; unfortunately, slowly but surely, it lost its way.

This happened to the dismay of anime and manga fans everywhere, especially because Bleach had the style and attitude to become an anime capable of defining a generation. It sadly couldn't keep itself afloat.

1 OVERLOOKED: GUYVER

Guyver is an anime based on a classic manga of the same name. It's the story of a boy that ends up in possession of an alien suit of armor that pulls him into a world of trouble he had no idea of. It's a very dark series and can be compared to anime classics like Akira and Ninja Scroll. This adaptation is one of the best and very faithful to its source.

Not only is there lots of awesome action and gore but the character development is top-notch. You'll find yourself going into Guyver for the awesome bio-boosted armor and staying to watch Sho and his girlfriend grow together.
