There are many anime villains that fans end up liking despite their horrible actions. Whether it be because of them eventually gaining redemption and atoning for their past, revealing a more sympathetic side to themselves, or just being straight-up smart with how they achieve their villainous goals, there is no doubt that there are some actually likable anime villains.

However, there are also just as many completely unlikable ones, and despite being given potential redemption in some series, they're still unlikable due to the gravity of their past actions. Other anime villains are given no redeeming traits at all, and everyone, from fans to characters within the same series, loved to hate these villains.

Shou Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist gets a special shout-out due to using his alchemy to turn not just his wife, but also his daughter Nina and dog Alexander into chimeras. Shou initially turned just his wife into a chimera to gain his Alchemist License, but when the deadline approached for showing new findings, he used this opportunity to turn Nina and Alexander into one chimera. Ed and Alphonse were enraged by this just as much as viewers were, especially when Shou showed no remorse for doing such things to his own family. Even though Shou was later killed off by Scar, there was no way to bring Nina and Alexander back.

9 Akira Takaoka Abused And Tried To Murder Students (Assassination Classroom)

Akira Takaoka from Assassination Classroom doesn't look like a bad guy at first, but his actions in the series, including abusing the students and only using them to gain fame from them eventually killing Korosensei, made many fans realize he was actually a villain. Additionally, after he was fired, he planned to poison most of the students in the school as revenge. These actions easily cemented him as a horrible villain with no chance of redemption whatsoever, and a character many loved to hate.

8 Meruem Wanted To Turn An Entire Nation Into Chimera Ants (Hunter X Hunter)

Mereum from Hunter x Hunter may have had valid intentions, but he was so unlikable because of his means to his goal during the Chimera Ant Arc. He tried turning an entire nation into Nen-powered Chimera soldiers.

He was also responsible for the deaths of many innocent citizens and Hunters due to his own actions and the work of his soldiers, such as Neferpitou. Finally, his fight with Chairman Netero led to Netero's death, forcing the characters in the following arc to find a new Hunter Association Chairman.

7 Warden Ishihara Abused Prisoners And Helped Cover Up Sasaki's Similar Crimes (Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou No Shichinin)

Warden Ishihara abused the prisoners in Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shinchinin by regularly conducting beatings and other extreme punishments for extremely minor crimes. He tried to kill one of the prisoners during a fire and killed one of the few nice guards in the series as well. All of these actions, including his covering up Sasaki's abuse of prisoners himself, made many fans despise him.

6 Endeavor Abused His Family And Was The Source Of His Son's Trauma (My Hero Academia)

Endeavor from My Hero Academia, also known as Enji Todoroki, abused his son Shoto and his wife to try to surpass All Might as the number one Hero. However, despite the series later trying to give him more redeeming traits, many thought it was too little, too late to make him likable in the eyes of any character in the show. No matter what redeeming traits he gained later on, they did little to nothing to make him sympathetic due to the gravity of his past horrible actions.

5 Alois Trancy's Backstory Did Little To Help Him (Black Butler)

The second season of Black Butler introduced Alois Trancy, who was supposed to be as morally ambiguous as Ciel was with his twisted backstory. However, Alois hijacking Ciel's body and essentially making everyone suffer for little to no reason made many fans outright hate him.

Alois also regularly abused his maid and other servants, and despite his backstory, he was hard to sympathize with and barely had any redeeming traits whatsoever. All of these elements factored into many despising him and being glad that he was defeated at the end of the series.

4 Yuno Gasai Is A Complete Yandere (The Future Diary)

Yuno Gasai from The Future Diary was the main female protagonist of the series, but she was also a villain due to her obsession with the other protagonist Yukiteru Amane. Despite her innocent appearance, she was incredibly jealous of the other female characters that Yukiteru interacted with and tried to kill them on numerous occasions. Her actions made her a classic yandere figure but also scared many viewers, making it hard to sympathize with her despite being a protagonist.

3 Kuradeel Stalked Asuna And Almost Murdered Her And Kirito (Sword Art Online)

Kuradeel actively stalked Asuna in Sword Art Online despite being in the same guild as her, and he tried to keep Kirito away from her. When that failed, especially after Kirito joined the Knights of Blood when Heathcliff beat him in a duel, Kuradeel plotted to kill Kirito himself.

Kuradeel ended up murdering a fellow Knights of Blood member during this attempt and also tried killing Asuna when she arrived to help save Kirito. Even though his stint as a villain was short-lived, Kuradeel committed many horrible actions during his run on the show.

2 Isabella Raised Children As Livestock For Demons (The Promised Neverland)

Isabella from The Promised Neverland first came off as kind and gentle to the children she raised. However, it was later revealed that she was only raising them to be livestock for demons to preserve her own life. This revelation incensed many fans as they realized that Isabella never cared for the children in a way that a parental figure should. Isabella only doing this for the sake of her own life didn't help redeem her in the eyes of the other characters or the viewers.

1 Medusa Abused Her Child And Manipulated Many People (Soul Eater)

Medusa from Soul Eater is despised by fans due to abusing Crona and raising her child to ultimately become a killer. Additionally, she manipulated many people to achieve her goals. These actions coupled with her frightening powers made an unlikable, creepy villain and one that many loved to hate. This made Medusa's eventual defeat even more satisfying in the end.
