Considering how shonen anime are often some of the most popular anime, it’s no surprise they’re also some of the longest series as well. Often they can run for dozens, or even hundreds of episodes before they finally reach their conclusion.

But even though their stories can last years, that doesn’t mean fans are done with them. On the contrary, even after the credits roll on a story that took the author years to complete, fans clamor for more time with their favorite universes and characters. In the case of some universes, it’s actually justified, as the story either left the door open for more or the universe is so interesting it begs to be explored.

8 Magic Kaito 1412 Needs To Solve The Mystery Of The Main Character's Missing Father

Magic Kaito 1412 Phantom Kid Kaito

Hardcore anime fans will find Magic Kaito’s art style somewhat familiar, as it strongly resembles a certain anime about a young detective. The series actually came Detective Conan, but it wasn’t quite the sales hit that Conan was. Once Conan grew in popularity, Magic Kaito became a backburner project. Nonetheless, it was adapted several years ago into an anime.

The story followed the main character, Kaito Kuroba, who becomes a phantom thief to discover who killed his father. The mystery went unsolved when the anime came to an end, which is all the more reason for someone to come back around and finish the adaptation.

7 Demon Slayer Introduces A New Cast Of Characters To Tell Stories With

Tanjiro headbutts Sanemi

Demon Slayer had a pretty concrete ending in the manga. The lead antagonist was defeated and so many of them went on to live happily ever after. But of course, the end of the story shows the future generation of characters living a peaceful life. It would be easy enough to tell a story that was slice of life and showed their everyday lives, enjoying the peace that their ancestors gave them.

But it would also be easy to revive the demons and show the new generation learning to fight in the styles of their parents before the demon threat got too far out of hand. What happened to Muzan seems like something that could be repeated, after all.

6 Bleach Left Some Places Unexplored For Potential Future Storylines

bleach ichigo

Ichigo Kurosaki’s story is mostly completed in the manga. This is why fans are eagerly awaiting the actual sequel in the form of the last of his story. Meanwhile, people who have read the manga are still hoping to see a full series from Burn the Witch, the Western branch of the Soul Society. These are both the true “sequels” to Bleach that are there for people in the near future.

Having said that, while Ichigo has climbed to become the most powerful Shinigami that ever lived, that doesn’t stop them from telling stories about further adventures. The end of the manga gives a ton of space for telling future stories in the human world alone, never mind all the other many realms that were introduced during the series.

5 Great Teacher Onizuka Could Focus On An Older Onizuka Teaching Young Students

Eikichi Onizuka from Great Teacher Onizuka

Great Teacher Onizuka is an anime that might actually be more popular as a Japanese drama than it is an anime. The series has been turned into a drama twice before, once in the late nineties and then a second time in 2012 which ran for two seasons. The story follows Eikichi Onizuka, a former biker gang member who decides to become a teacher for less than ideal reasons. Though he barely passes, he still wants to become the best teacher ever, and winds up stuck with a dangerous private school class of kids.

Undaunted, Onizuka gradually gets each of the kids on his side. This is a story that would be just as resonant today as it was in the past, especially considering how often children feel like they’re unheard by adults. They could go with a new teacher, but it’d be even cooler to see Onizuka as an older man still working with troublesome students.

4 City Hunter Should Get A Sequel Set Within The Modern Era

City Hunter Saeba Ryo pointing his gun

Technically, City Hunter has a spin-off series in the form of Angel Heart. But Tsukasa Hojo himself has confirmed that Angel Heart is a parallel universe rather than specifically a continuation of City Hunter. With that being said, the City Hunter universe is one that could definitely stand to be upgraded for the modern era.

In the original series, Saeba Ryo was a “sweeper” who worked on any job for the right price as part of the organization “City Hunter.” Ryo’s life changes when his partner dies and he begins working with his partner’s sister, Kaori Makimura, and the two of them eventually fall in love. A sequel that took place in the modern world would hopefully progress their relationship and allow them to be married, while still letting Ryo be just as awesome at solving cases as he was back in the '80s. An upgrade like this worked for Lupin; why not City Hunter?

3 Fairy Tail Has A Sequel Manga That Should Be Adapted Into An Anime

fairy tail manga

Much of Fairy Tail’s storyline was wrapped up with the defeat of Zeref and Acnologia. However, the end of the series still left a few questions to be resolved—like where did Zeref’s curse come from? And what started the dragons on the road to attacking humanity?

While the first question hasn’t been answered yet, the second one has potential, as there’s already a sequel manga being published in the form of Fairy Tail: 100 Years War. Currently there’s no confirmation that the sequel manga will be made into an anime, but considering Hiro Mashima’s popularity and track record, there’s a good chance it will.

2 Yu Yu Hakusho Had Several Arcs That Were Hinted That Could Be Developed Into An Anime

Genkai Friends - Yu Yu Hakusho

It might seem to some people that Yu Yu Hakusho had a perfect run. But those who’ve read the manga are aware of something that might have passed anime fans by. Mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi ended Yu Yu Hakusho not because he was done telling the story, but because the mounting pressure of working on a hit project became too much.

In one of the last chapters, several cases Yusuke went on were talked about that would have turned the entire series on it’s head. Whole arcs are reduced to mere sentences of dialogue, and if Toei wanted they could easily make a sequel based on these ideas.

1 Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Could Get A Sequel Following The Adventures Of Yugi And Friends When They're Older

yu gi oh team

The Yu-Gi-Oh franchise gets plenty of sequels, but in this case what’s desired is a sequel to Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters--a storyline that goes into detail on the lives of Yugi and the others after Atem was defeated and their lives returned to “normal.” They’ve appeared in the films a time or two, but generally they exist during the main season. There’s no better time to make a sequel happen, as Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS seems to be a repudiation of how complex the rules of Yu-Gi-Oh have gotten, creating an entirely different game for people to play.

Meanwhile, the card game has been revitalizing old decks left and right as it appeals to the older audience of the original game. If they want to market that older game anymore, the best way to do it would be looking at Yugi, Joey, and the others in a new era, dealing with all the new forms of summoning types and rules.
