A new trailer for the upcoming Shin Ultraman film has been released.

The trailer features snippets of footage of the Science Special Search Party (SSSP) as they leap into action when the alien monsters Neronga and Gabora descend to Earth. Ultraman himself briefly shows up toward the end of the trailer, with his design from the original series perfectly replicated.

Shin Ultraman marks a reunion between Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, who previously worked on the 2016 film Shin GodzillaShin Godzilla presented a more modern take on the King of the Monsters, with Shin Ultraman aiming to do the same for its tokusatsu hero. Anno is also known as the creator of the highly popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The original Ultraman series focused on Shin Hayata, who merged with an alien being known as the Giant of Light. Hayata would transform into Ultraman in times of great duress to battle alien monsters alongside the SSSP. The Ultraman series has led to several spinoffs, becoming one of the most popular franchises in Japan. Tsuburaya Productions has taken great strides to make the library of Ultraman content more accessible to viewers in the United States, including DVD releases of Ultraman series by Shout! Factory and Marvel Comics releasing new Ultraman series.

Written by Hideaki Anno and directed by Shinji Higuchi, Shin Ultraman will premiere in Japanese theaters in 2021.
