Shin Ultraman has been delayed indefinitely.

Originally scheduled to premiere this summer, Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's take on the Tokusatsu hero will be delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacting its production schedule. A new release date for the film will be announced at a later time, according to the official Shin Ultraman website.

Shin Ultraman reunites Anno and Higuchi, who previously worked together on Shin Godzilla. In the same way that Shin Godzilla presents a much more modern take on the King of the Monsters, Shin Ultraman will present a new version of Ultraman for modern times. The film is directed by Higuchi, while Anno -- best known for creating the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion -- is penning the screenplay and producing. Higuchi also served as a writer on Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as doing storyboards and visual effects for multiple anime and kaiju projects.

The original Ultraman series features Shin Hayata merging with the Giant of Light to become Ultraman, battling kaiju invaders with the help of the Science Special Search Party (SSSP).  Tsuburaya Productions, which owns the rights to Ultraman, has worked to make the entire library of Ultraman content more accessible to viewers in the United States. Tsuburaya has also created a new line of Ultraman comics in partnership with Marvel.

Written by Hideaki Anno and directed by Shinji Higuchi, Shin Ultraman currently has yet to receive a release date.
