The following contains spoilers for Episode 8 of Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie, "Cultural Festival II," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Episode 7 of Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie saw the blue-haired Kamiya make her debut, and during a quiet moment together with Izumi Yuu in the library, Kamiya admitted she envied the relationship between him and his seemingly perfect girlfriend Shikimori. In Episode 8, Kamiya wrangles with those covetous feelings once again -- and she feels downright ashamed of them.

Kamiya nurses a secret crush on Izumi and likens herself to a background character in Cinderella, a maiden doomed to obscurity when prince Izumi falls for the glass slipper-wearing Shikimori. Soon, however, Kamiya and Shikimori have a heart-to-heart on the school roof -- where both girls show their gracious and compassionate side.

In Episode 8, Shikimori and Kamiya find themselves face-to-face with the school festival's matchmaking game, and each girl tries her best to keep the peace and not upset the other. This game could potentially create feelings of disappointment, envy or even jealousy among the students if things go badly, and for Kamiya, it really does create all kinds of negative feelings of guilt. She doesn't like having a crush on someone else's boyfriend but cannot quell those feelings so easily. At least she can hand over her paper heart to make Shikimori happy with Izumi. But Shikimori wants more than a number here -- she's not that shallow or selfish.

Shikimori and Kamiya meet up on the roof, where they lay their hearts bare. Just the fact that they can be so honest with one another flatters them both, and better yet, the conversation is a productive one. Kamiya explains herself in full, including her feelings of guilt. She thinks she's a bad person to covet Shikimori's boyfriend, only for Shikimori to say the opposite.

The titular Shikimori is convinced that any girl who likes the kind-hearted Izumi must be a wonderful person, just like Izumi himself. On that basis alone, Shikimori forgives Kamiya and trusts her to do the right thing. They then embrace as friends, and with that, Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie brings its new love triangle to a swift end. It was really little more than Kamiya being cautious about her own feelings and hiding them to protect the happiness of others, but she has nothing to worry about and can now rest easy.

At first it seems the tentative love triangle between Izumi, Shikimori and Kamiya is resolved with unusual ease in Episode 8, but in reality, there is no way Shikimori and Kamiya could actually be enemies or even friendly rivals. Friendly competition is a minor theme in Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie, but the relationship between Shikimori and Kamiya is instead based on mutual understanding. These girls have too much in common to be at odds with one another, and are predisposed to easily sympathize with one another.

In particular, Kamiya and Shikimori are both popular, charismatic students who are considered nearly perfect, and everyone looks up to them as leaders and role models. Kamiya and Shikimori may not have total imposter syndrome where this is concerned, but they are also humble enough to know the reality falls a bit short of how their classmates perceive them. Both girls are actually somewhat uncomfortable with that gap, knowing they can't actually live up to those impossibly high expectations and that no one can appreciate their true, flawed selves.

For that reason, in addition to her natural compassion, Shikimori finds it easy to comfort her would-be love rival Kamiya rather than chase her off or feel threatened. And in return, Kamiya promises to keep her hands off Izumi and admire him and Shikimori from a respectful distance. This is how Shikimori and Kamiya will keep the peace, all without anyone getting hurt.
