Sherlock Holmes Sequel At Last Gets A Title: A Game Of Shadows

Details of the sequel to director Guy Ritchie’s 2009 hit Sherlock Holmes have been about as difficult to uncover as the culprit in an Arthur Conan Doyle novel.

Over the past few months, we’ve been able to detect that the story centers on the pursuit by Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and John Watson (Jude Law) of Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who “might be the world’s first supervillain.” And co-stars Noomi Rapace as the gun-toting Gypsy Sim and Stephen Fry as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft. Beyond that clues have been scarce.

But now we have an honest-to-goodness title, courtesy of E! Online: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The website calls it “lame,” but it’s certainly an improvement over Sherlock Holmes 2 or “the untitled Sherlock Holmes sequel.” I actually kind of like it, though, as it has a vaguely Victorian feel, in line with Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet or The Sign of the Four.

The movie opens on Dec. 16.
