Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will be reprising their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively, in Sherlock Holmes 3, which is set to release in 2020.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. announced that a third Sherlock Holmes movie starring Downey Jr. will be released on Dec. 25, 2020, 11 years after the release of the first Sherlock Holmes. While Guy Ritchie directed the first two entries in the franchise, there's no director currently attached to the third entry. Sherlock Holmes 3 will be produced by Susan Downey, Joel Silver and Lionel Wigram.
The late 2020 release date for Sherlock Holmes 3 likely confirms early estimates that production on the film will begin at the end of this year, though no official details have yet been announced. Downey Jr. is currently in production on The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, while also developing Perry Mason for HBO with his production company.
Downey Jr. last portrayed the role of Sherlock Holmes in 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, though he's remained keen on reprising the role for several years, despite production delays.
