She-Hulk: Attorney at Law breakout star and Marvel Cinematic Universe newcomer Patty Guggenheim opens up about how her best scene on the show came to be.
Speaking to Marvel, Guggenheim was asked about the process behind coming up with the post-credits sequence featuring her bubbly, party-girl character Madisynn King and the MCU's current Sorcerer Supreme - Wong. Guggenheim explained that it began when director Kat Coiro "had this idea to put this tag on. She literally grabbed [a blanket] from her daughter and was like, 'We're gonna use this.' I was like, 'Yes, yes we are.'"
"[The crew] made popcorn and then we sat down and you know, Benny [Wong] is so game and fun and cool," Guggenheim recalled. "We were like a little bit like, what are we gonna do? [Kat] was asked, what would they be talking about? Brunch came up. So it just started this like back and forth of me trying to explain what brunch is to him. Then it morphed into these drinks and it was just so fun."
Guggenheim made her MCU debut on the fourth episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, titled "Is This Not Real Magic?" as the victim of one of hack illusionist Donny Blaze's stage shows. After being thrust into a hellish dimension, Madisynn ended up in the care of Benedict Wong's Sorcerer Supreme who takes Blaze to court for abusing his magical powers. Madisynn became an overnight sensation with fans, who quickly flooded social media with both praise and memes dedicated to the character.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which stars Tatiana Maslany in the titular role, has been lauded by critics and audiences for its tone and humor. Director Anu Valia has previously discussed how much of She-Hulk's comedic inspiration came from Taika Waititi's own MCU debut with 2017's Thor: Ragnarok. "Like, he balanced that so well. I think that was maybe, out of the Marvel films, that was like the most forefront of my mind," Valia said.
Maslany herself has also touched on what separates She-Hulk: Attorney at Law from more conventional superhero stories. "She really is the antithesis of most superhero narratives," Maslany stated. "There's this great element of denial in her that's relatable. For me, it was about rejecting what’s happened for as long as I could, as that’s what causes the fun tension between Jennifer and She-Hulk."
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is currently streaming on Disney+. New episodes premiere every Thursday until Oct. 13.
