The following contains spoilers for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Season 1, Episode 9, "Whose Show Is This?", now streaming on Disney+.

One of the more amusing promotional gags helping to push She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a bogus 1-877-SHE-HULK number where "clients" could call and get a voice mail message from Jennifer Walters. It's one of those little touches that brings a sense of fun to what has long become a routine PR process. It's also a great way to signal that She-Hulk isn't going to be like other entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show largely hinges on the idea that Walters is happy just being a lawyer. Naturally, she'd have a phone number for those interested in her services.

The message has changed to reflect developments in the first season. For example, after Titania trademarked the She-Hulk name in Season 1, Episode 4 "Is This Not Real Magic?" she took over the phone line to mock Walters. With the first season now concluded in Episode 9, "Whose Show Is This?", the phone line has been taken over by Walters' frenemy Mallory Book. That could lend some clues as to where the show might go with a second season.

Mallory Book Takes Over the She-Hulk Hotline

She-Hulk has a dark web threat in the Intelligencia

Book has been played as a more or less stalwart ally of Jennifer's, along with fellow lawyer Augustus "Pug" Pugliese and Jennifer's unflappable assistant Nikki Ramos. Unlike Pug and Nikki, however, she has no intention of forming a friendship with Jen. She's curt and snarky towards her colleague, even when they're on the same side. After Jennifer's life falls apart following her doxxing and arrest in Episode 8, "Ribbit and Rip It," she loses her job at GLK&H. Nikki, Pug and Mallory stay on however -- Nikki quite sheepishly -- and presumably remain there after Jennifer clears her name at the end of the episode.

The phone message suggests that things will be that way going forward. It's a deliberately amateurish voice-mail message with an in-character Book and Pug clearly recording the message from her office. It states that Book is now the head of GLK&H's superhuman law division, as well as boasting about the famous and/or super-powered clients throughout the season. That includes Megan Thee Stallion, Abomination and Wong: all of whom were Jennifer's clients, not Book's.

Mallory's Message Teases a Major Rivalry for Season 2

Mallory Book And She-Hulk In She-Hulk Attorney At Law

If Mallory is indeed taking over Jennifer's position as the head of the firm's superhuman law division, it sets up a major rivalry for a subsequent season of She-Hulk. Jennifer presumably has no interest in returning to GLK&H, where her boss was uncaring at best and borderline hostile at worst. Yet, she's also an expert on superhuman law -- as much for her good lawyering as for her actual possession of superpowers -- and is back at work at the end of the season walking into court. She's likely either back at the DA's office or in a rival firm.

This premise sets the two frenemies up as regular antagonists on either side of the courtroom. It would give a second season something the first season lacked: a single, unchanging foil for Jennifer. This demonstrates growth and development from the first season's ideas. The pair has already evinced a grudging respect for each other -- reaching a truce of sorts at the end of Season 1, Episode 5, "Mean, Green and Straight Poured into These Jeans" -- which provides the kind of ongoing tension that can sustain a long series of confrontations.

More importantly, Mallory's potential status as a rival affirms one of She-Hulk's central principles. While Jennifer acknowledges that she is a superhero at the end of the season, she still believes that she can do as much good as a lawyer than she can beating up costumed miscreants in the streets. Book makes the ideal way to further that idea, in which case the change in the promo phone message holds a lot more weight than it looks.

The first season of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is currently streaming in its entirety on Disney+.
