The following contains major spoilers for She-Hulk #4, available now from Marvel Comics.

Jennifer Walters has long had one of the most complicated lives in the entire Marvel Universe. Despite her hulking, superheroic stature as She-Hulk, Jenn has worked hard to define herself apart from her irradiated form. While this has led to her having a mostly successful career as an attorney, even Jenn's legal career has suffered on occasion due to her green alter-ego. Of course, just because she has had to overcome more mundane challenges than many of her costumed compatriots doesn't mean that Jennifer is any less of a hero. In fact, she might even be the most important Avenger of them all because of it.

Since returning to the spotlight, Jennifer has been caught up in a whirlwind of new developments just as exciting as they are frustrating. The sudden appearance of Jack of Hearts had already sent her life into a tailspin, but She-Hulk #4 (by Rainbos Rowell, Luca Maresca, Rico Ronzi, and VC's Joe Caramagna) makes things even more tense by introducing a slew of other heroes into the picture. When nearly a dozen of Jennifer's fellow heroes show up at her office, she has to break the news to them that her current employer is deadset against taking on any superpowered clients. Thankfully, Jenn is still willing to work with her friends and allies. She may have to do so in relative silence, but considering she is almost the only lawyer on the planet who knows what they've been through, they really can't afford to argue with her.

Ever since her first appearance back in the pages of 1979's Savage She-Hulk #1 by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Jennifer has faced the stark reality of her dual identities, as well as the seemingly infinite gulf between them. Her success as a lawyer was almost always overshadowed by her alter-ego in those early days, yet Jenn consistently pushed back against being stereotyped in any way. Whether taking on costumed criminals alone or as part of a team, She-Hulk was only ever another aspect of Jennifer herself rather than the kind of separate persona that Bruce Banner has had to deal with.

Because of this, Jenn never wavered in any of her pursuits, least of all those of the legal variety. Over the years she has successfully defended Captain America without having to reveal his true identity to the world, taken on firms far more resourceful than her own, and shown the world what a hero can do without ever stepping foot on a battlefield. This coupled with her proximity to the rest of the superpowered world has led to her becoming the foremost attorney when it comes to anything more than human. The fact that she is able to in the first place, however, has elevated her to a status that only she could attain.

Matt Murdock may be in similar straits when it comes to the courtroom, but his secret identity as Daredevil means he will never be on the same level. By carrying her heart on her sleeve, Jennifer is a beacon for the superhero community, one that shines bright in the face of those who might fear or hate her kind. By standing tall rather than putting on a meeker face, Jenn both instills hope in the public and in those that protect them, often at great personal expense.

It's for this reason that Jennifer is almost universally loved, even by her own enemies. She and Titania not only overcame the issues between them, but turned their rivalry into a genuinely heartfelt friendship. This isn't just indicative of her ability to bridge deeply rooted personal divides, but to sway the views of those whose minds appear to be already made up. Without Jennifer, many of Marvel's greatest heroes would be left to a system designed to exploit them, or to criminalize those it can't. Luckily, that isn't something any of them will have to worry about, at least not as long as She-Hulk is willing to make a stand for them.
