Mark Ruffalo, reprising his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, spoke about how the new Disney+ series brings certain creative elements to the table that have not been seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with ET Online, Ruffalo said, "This is a radical, revolutionary show. It has this tongue-in-cheek, self-referential thing going on." The character of Jen Walters/She-Hulk is known for breaking the fourth wall in the Marvel Comics, an idiosyncrasy that will also be depicted in the series.

She-Hulk head writer Jessica Gao has referenced another fourth-wall-breaking comedy as inspiration for the unique style of the show: the Emmy-winning series Fleabag from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Amazon Studios. Tatiana Maslany, acting in the title role of She-Hulk, is an award-winner herself, garnering Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Orphan Black in 2016. Her role as Jennifer Walters is her first foray into the MCU.

Maslany described the show as Marvel Studios' "first true half-hour comedy." Discussing how the narrative intersects with other storylines and characters in the MCU, Maslany commented on the various cameo inclusions. "They come in with their characters that have this legacy of all the movies they've been in, and all the stories they've told, but this one is a totally different world," Maslany said.

Notable characters from the wider MCU confirmed to appear in She-Hulk include Emil Blonsky/The Abomination, as portrayed by Tim Roth, and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The Abomination recently had a small role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings after more than a decade had passed since his last appearance in The Incredible Hulk (2008). Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock surprised fans with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home after a few years of uncertainty concerning his future in the MCU, prompted by Netflix's cancellation of the Daredevil series.

Another Marvel Comics character famous for breaking the fourth wall is Deadpool, also known as the "Merc with a Mouth." Ryan Reynolds' cinematic interpretation of the foul-mouthed antihero spawned two of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. However, She-Hulk will follow the pattern of all other MCU series on Disney+ up to this point, with a TV-14 rating. Thus, there will be some limits to the language and content of the fourth-wall-breaking humor in comparison to the Deadpool films.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a nine-episode series, will premiere on Disney+ on Aug. 17.
