She-Hulk director Kat Coiro revealed in a recent interview that the Queen of the 4th Wall Break, Jennifer Walters, will potentially have something to connect with on the other side of her meta moments.

In a recent interview posted on YouTube, Coiro talked about the character's trademark fourth wall breaks, hinting that there might be something for Jennifer to engage with during these moments that are important to the show's plot. "She-Hulk has been breaking the fourth wall since way before Deadpool or Fleabag, so that concept was baked into the character even before the scripts were written," Coiro said. "So then, as we began to execute the show it was really about finding the balance between, you know, how many are enough to draw the audience in, but not so many that we alienate them from the story and the world that we're building, because we want them to be invested in these characters that are very real, but also know what there's something else out there that she's connecting to that hopefully we get a chance to see."

A History of Meta Commentary

Many first-time She-Hulk viewers are surprised when they discover that the "Merc with a Mouth" Deadpool was not the first Marvel character to break the fourth wall. The green hero has been taking breaks to talk to her fans and writers since her 1989 Sensational She-Hulk comics, and the new Disney+ show will be continuing the trend. Both Coiro and lead writer Jessica Gao have made statements assuring viewers that they've worked hard to make sure that Walter's self-awareness will not be "'over-powering".

Coiro's suggestion that the character may be engaging with someone or something else within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in addition to her standard audience engagement would be a way to expand further the already massive multiverse Marvel has built. With rumors that both Krysten Ritter and Charlie Cox are returning to reprise their roles as Jessica Jones and Daredevil in addition to Mark Ruffalo's appearance as Hulk for the show, She-Hulk is already shaping up to act as a bridge between the films and the TV series.

Both Coiro and Gao seem enthused with the lawyer's opportunities to engage with the audience. Who Walters will be speaking with during these breaks has not been confirmed, but there have been previous suggestions that the character may address everyone from the audience to her writers and even MCU boss Kevin Feige.
