She-Hulk: Attorney at Law head writer Jessica Gao makes a surprise appearance along with her Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart for the series' Season 1 finale.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Ginger Gonzaga, who portrays Nikki Ramos on the series, explained Gao made her own MCU debut twice in one scene. During one of the finale's many fourth wall-breaking moments, Gao makes a cameo appearance as a member of the series' writers room alongside Eden Lee, who is credited as Writer Jessica in the episode.

The ninth episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, entitled "Whose Show Is This?," finds Tatiana Maslany's titular hero embarking on a meta adventure that eventually leads her directly to her own show's writers' room, as well as to the in-universe architect of the MCU. Gao previously discussed her initial hesitancy with pushing the story so far outside the bounds of a typical MCU finale, and how Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige convinced her to do just that. Gao recalled, "He was like, 'Why? No one's telling you to do that, you don't have to do that, you can do something completely different, we should be doing something completely different because this show is so different from anything that Marvel has done."

She-Hulk Director Anu Valia also opened up about the finale ahead of its premiere. "I think where the rest of the season goes is so fun and different, and ideally not what you expect," Valia said. "And so I'm hoping people are surprised and a little like, 'Oh, they're having some fun with this.' So just keep watching it."

She-Hulk Takes on Marvel Studios

Although the finale made obvious fun of the MCU's frequently formulaic approach to storytelling, Gao has noted that the writers were only allowed to be so overtly mean towards the studio. "Most of the time, the only jokes they really forced us to pull back on were when we were being a little too mean when we were poking fun at Marvel things," Gao said.

Gao also touched on how her relationship with Feige evolved over the course of the series, explaining, "I probably fight with Kevin more than any person at Marvel. But it truly is a testament to what an egoless, wonderful person he is that he constantly puts up with me arguing with him. He really lets me bully him in a way. I'm very mean to him, and he really allows it. So it's really nice because there is no other president of a studio who would really put up with me the way that he does."
