The following contains spoilers for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Episode 9, "Whose Show Is This?," now streaming on Disney+.

The minds behind She-Hulk: Attorney at Law considered including an unlikely cameo in Season 1 finale: Edward Norton, reprising his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's original Bruce Banner.

The finale, "Whose Show Is This?", includes a chaotic climax where many of Jen Walters' friends and enemies come together in a massive brawl, including a rematch between Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Emil Blonsky/Abomination (Tim Roth). In an interview with The Direct, director Kat Coiro said of the fight, "There was a lot of talk about the fact that the last time they were together a different actor was playing the Hulk. And Mark made quite a few jokes about that. And we did entertain the idea of swapping Mark out for Edward Norton. But that did not come to pass."

Norton played Bruce Banner in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, the second feature in the MCU. However, Norton and Marvel parted ways after the film and Ruffalo took over the character in 2012's The Avengers and has played him in all subsequent appearances. She-Hulk references the casting change in its second episode when Bruce comments that the last time he fought Blonsky, he was "a completely different person," although Jen is the only one who gets the joke.

The She-Hulk Finale Had Plenty of Cameos

Even with Norton's absence, "Whose Show Is This?" was still chock-full of cameos, including the return of Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and the surprise introduction of Skaar (Wil Deusner), the Hulk's half-alien son. Head writer Jessica Gao said she pushed to have Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige voice K.E.V.I.N., the AI who makes all the creative decisions, but he refused. Additionally, Coiro wanted to include the return of Madisynn King (Patty Guggenheim), the ditzy party girl who became a fan-favorite in the show's fourth episode, "Is This Not Real Magic?", but that didn't come to pass.

Norton's return wouldn't have been the first time an MCU project brought back a superhero actor to reprise their role. WandaVision included Evan Peters as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver, who played the character in the X-Men franchise, replacing Aaron Taylor-Johnson from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Additionally, Spider-Man: No Way Home famously concluded with previous web-slingers Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning to team up with Tom Holland's version of the character.
