Shazam! Fury of the Gods dropped its first teaser, and it's quite dark. Literally.
The teaser was shared on Twitter by director David F. Sandberg, and features glimpses of the hero's new costume set to dramatic music. However, staying true to the nature of the franchise, it concludes on a humorous note, with a silhouette of Zachary Levi asking, "Why is it so dark? Probably would have been a good idea to have, like, one light on."
The teaser comes on the same day that photos of the Big Red Cheese's new costume leaked online. The updated look features a fresh belt, lightning bolt, bracers and accents. While the cape is missing, that is expected to be added later on in production with CGI and special effects.
The sequel will see the titular hero face off against the sisters Hespera and Kalypso, who will be portrayed by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, respectively. A third, unnamed sister will be played by Rachel Zegler. While the three characters don't have DC Comics counterparts, they will be presented as the daughters of Atlas.
Mark Strong, who starred as the villain of the first film, Sivana, recently gave his blessing to Liu and Mirren  after confirming he would not be returning for the sequel. "I'm very happy to give way to Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, who I think are going to make a couple of fantastic villains," he said.
Released in April 2019 in the United States, Shazam follows the 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who is gifted the ability to transform into the adult hero Shazam (Levi). With the help of his foster brother Freddy, Billy is able to master his powers — including flight, super speed and lightning — to defeat the evil Sivana (Strong), who allied himself with the Seven Deadly Sins. The film grossed $365 million at the global box office off an $80-$100 million budget, making it the third-lowest grossing film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), ahead of Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi as Shazam, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Marta Milans as Mama Rosa, Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso and Rachel Zegler in an undisclosed role. The film arrives in theaters June 2, 2023.
