Warner Bros. and DC's Shazam! electrified the box office, surpassing expectations to earn $50 million over its opening weekend domestically and over $155 million worldwide.
When tracking initially came online for the film, Shazam! was reported to be eyeing a $40 million domestic opening. However, like many superhero flicks before it, word of mouth appears to have pushed the film well past those estimates. The latest numbers have Shazam! taking in $53.5 million this weekend, which was enough to propel it to the top spot at the box office for yet another win for DC at the box office following December's Aquaman, which later went on to secure $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
In total, adding the $3.3 million the film earned from Fandango early screenings, Shazam! has earned $56.8 million to date at the domestic box office. Overseas, the film appears to be playing even stronger. Produced on a modest $100 million budget -- well below many superhero flicks -- Shazam! has earned $102 million from 79 markets -- with $30.9 million of that coming from China alone. That brings the film's global weekend haul to an impressive $155.5 million.
Coming in second this weekend was the latest adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary. That film earned $25 million, securing the second-best start for a King adaption, behind only 2017's It, which kicked off its run with $123.4 million -- not adjusted for inflation.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vásquez, and Marta Milans as Rosa Vásquez.
