New Line's Shazam! has officially started production, and Warner Bros. has marked the occasion with a new plot synopsis for the DC Comics-based film.

The synopsis emphasized the inherent fun in the concept -- a 14-year-old kid who can magically transform into a superpowered adult. As it states, "Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!"

Along with the start of production -- the film will be shot in Toronto and is set primarily in Philadelphia -- the Shazam! main cast, headed by Zachary Levi (Shazam), Asher Angel (Billy Batson) and Mark Strong (Dr. Thaddeus Sivana), are all confirmed in the press release. Additionally, Warner Bros. reveals that the film is "Firmly set in the DC universe but with his own distinctly fun, family-centric tone."

Here's the synopsis in full:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Shazam, previously known prominently as Captain Marvel, first appeared in 1940's Whiz Comics #2, and was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Originally published by Fawcett Comics, the character was licensed by DC Comics starting in 1972, and fully acquired by DC in 1991.

Shazam! also stars Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy, Grace Fulton as Mary, Faithe Herman as Darla, Ian Chen as Eugene, Jovan Armand as Pedro, Ron Cephas Jones as the Wizard and Cooper Andrews and Marta Milans as foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez. Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! is scheduled for release on April 5, 2019.
