Despite rumors, John Williams' 1978 theme for Richard Donner’s Superman won’t be hummed by Asher Angel’s Billy Batson in the upcoming DC Extended Universe film Shazam!.
Shazam! director David F. Sandberg responded to a Tweet addressing a rumor that the Williams theme will be featured in the film, which apparently irritated and upset a contingent of fans. Although the account attributed it to hate against fans of Justice League director Zach Snyder, Sandberg squashed the rumors by confirming that the iconic theme doesn’t appear in the film at all but that he had considered adding it just to "keep the rage train going."
And the best part is that there’s no humming of any theme in the movie. Maybe we should add it though to keep the rage train going. 🚂🤬😤😡— David F. Sandberg (@ponysmasher) January 9, 2019
In a later Tweet, Sandberg explained that he can’t speak for fan-made trailers, which modify content to fit a unique vision, but that he -- being the film’s director -- can say what is and what isn’t in the film.
I can’t really speak for the trailers since I don’t make those. They can use deleted footage, add new dialogue, music, etc. But I know what is and isn’t in the movie itself.— David F. Sandberg (@ponysmasher) January 9, 2019
Since the film's first trailer dropped, Sandberg has handled a fair share of rumors for his upcoming film on Twitter. Whether it's "confirming" Billy will temporarily wear Aquaman's outfit as reference to James Wan's film or comparing the process of making the film to running a marathon, Sandberg has debunked false rumors without giving away any important details ahead of time.
Arriving on April 5, 2019, director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vásquez and Marta Milans as Rosa Vásquez.
