Shazam! Tops Aquaman During Preview Screenings

Even though it won't officially be released until next month, Shazam! already has one early victory against another DC Extended Universe movie at the box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, early preview screenings for Shazam! earned $3.3 million on Saturday, when the film screened at 1,200 theaters nationwide.

Over the past few months, some high-profile films have been showed weeks ahead of their official premieres at nationwide preview screenings. The practice has been successful with these earlier releases, but it looks like Shazam! scored better results than any of the other previews.

This surpasses the $2.6 million preview screening of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and $2.9 million earned by fellow DC blockbuster Aquaman, which held a similar preview last year through Amazon Prime and went on to earn over $1 billion at the international box office.

This bodes well for Shazam! which has also been earning critical praise ahead of its national release in two weeks. The super hero film currently has a 94% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing.
