Following the poor box office performance of Justice League and the overall criticism of Warner Bros.' overly-dark DC Extended Universe, the studio has shifted away from what director Zack Snyder started in his bleak take on Man of Steel.
However, Shazam! director Davids F. Sandberg has admitted that past movies, especially Justice Legaue, didn't influence his vision as he was only intent on setting his tone towards what the character's represented in comics over the years.
"I mean, it's such a separate film that I don't think it changed anything really," he said to Heroic Hollywood. "It's very different from Justice League. It's still the same universe, but just has a very different tone."
Fans have spotted Easter eggs paying tribute to the DC Extended Universe in early trailers, but recent footage has shown that it's even more upbeat and comedic than course-correcting offerings such as Wonder Woman and Aquaman. This has led to speculation that Shazam! will truly break free from the old movies as the superhero played by Zachary Levi has yet to appear in any flick prior.
Only time will tell, but with rumors that Henry Cavill would cameo as Superman now officially shut down, it does seem that Sandberg's movie will be the fresh start so many DCEU fans clamored in the past after past disappointments.
Arriving on April 5, director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vásquez and Marta Milans as Rosa Vásquez.
