Shazam! Movie Officially Begins Production

Following months of teasing, frequently with snapshots of action figures, Shazam! director David F. Sandberg has signaled the official start of principal photography on the New Line movie -- with a photo from the set, of course.

Rumors have long swirled around the film, but we do know for sure that it stars Zachary Levi (Chuck) in the title role, and Asher Angel (Andi Mack) as his young alter ego Billy Batson. Mark Strong (Green Lantern, Sherlock Holmes) plays the superhero's longtime nemesis, the mad scientist Doctor Sivana.

The latest rumor about the film, part of Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe, contends Henry Cavill reprise his role as Superman, as the studio wants to keep the iconic hero in play ahead of the release of the in-development sequel to Man of Steel. It's also been speculated that Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam may indeed appear in Shazam!, despite the announcement last year that DC Comics antihero would instead only star in his own solo film.

Arriving in theaters on April 5, 2019, Shazam! also stars Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena and Ron Cephas Jones as the Wizard.
