Warner Bros. has set the release of Shazam!, starring Zachary Levi, for April 5, 2019.
Warner Bros. had previously reserved the date for an "Untitled DC Movie," with director David F. Sandberg seemingly confirming in October that Shazam! would arrive then. However, the studio didn't make the official announcement until today.
Shazam! has been in development for years at Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinema, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson originally confirmed as the film's villain, Black Adam, in 2014. However, over the course of the past year, the film has undergone a massive shift, with Black Adam is now set to star in his own solo film, rather than in Shazam! Mark Strong looks set to take over the role of primary antagonist as Doctor Sivana, the hero's longtime nemesis from the comic books.
Directed by Sandberg from a script written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemk, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi as Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel), Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Mark Strong as the villain Doctor Sivana. Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation) has also been cast in an undisclosed role.
