Johns Describes Shazam Comic As 'If Roald Dahl Created Superheroes'

Writer Geoff Johns drew some inspiration from the classics for his upcoming Shazam! series with artist Dale Eaglesham. At Comic-Con International in San Diego, Johns discussed the series' "fun, family-centered" tone with CBR and compared it to such classics as Phantom Tollbooth and Wizard of Oz.

In comparison to Johns' other upcoming series Batman: Three JokersShazam! has "a very different tone! Much like Titans and Stargirl are different tones. I think, the one thing that I've tried to do in my career -- I love working on different tones, like Shazam! the movie is a very different tone than Titans and Shazam! the comic is a very different tone than Doomsday Clock."

"I keep saying [Shazam!] is like if Roald Dahl created superheroes," he added. "It's inspired by Phantom Tollbooth and Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter, like doing a real, fun, family-centered, emotional, magical character-driven story with these crazy characters that have no manual on what it is to be the Champions of Magic."

Asked if the comic's tone will be similar to the upcoming movie, he explained, "The movie that we produced is really -- and Henry Gayden did a great job on that script -- it really takes a lot from what Gary Frank and I did on Shazam. So we put it in the movie, now the movie is feeding back into the comics. It's all kind of feeding each other. It all lives in the same tonal place. And the kids that we introduced are in the movie too."
