Shazam! Fury of the Gods dropped an action-packed new trailer featuring the Daughters of Atlas, a terrifying dragon and a family of superheroes.

The video focuses on the titular character, once again played by Asher Angel as a teenager and Zachary Levi in hero form, alongside his fellow foster children friends, as they unite their powers to combat a new threat. Or so audiences believed. In a shocking twist, the trailer reveals that Billy takes his powers back from the Shazam Family and asks the Wizard to take his powers back as well. All this comes as the film's villains appear. Seeking an ancient power stolen from them thousands of years ago, Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler) challenge the so-called "Shazamily" for their powerful abilities.

Following the success of the first Shazam!, director David F. Sandberg is looking to further flesh out the currently-in-flux DC Universe by looking more toward history than comic book lore. Villains created specifically for Fury of the Gods, The Daughters of Atlas were inspired by Greek mythology in a move designed to deepen their connection to Shazam and his friends. "We landed there because Shazam's powers come from Greek gods," Sandberg said. "So what if those powers were stolen from the gods and now they want revenge?"

Despite Shazam's popularity and the success of the first film, many enthusiasts are wondering whether Fury of the Gods will sport any major DC cameos. Footage of the film shown at CinemaCon 2022 confirmed Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman makes an appearance in a dream sequence but any further appearances are currently unknown. Many fans were shocked to see both Ben Affleck's Batman and Jason Momoa's Aquaman used in Fury of the Gods' San Diego Comic-Con 2022 trailer but Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to reveal whether these characters will appear in the actual film.

While many fans are excited to see Levi again don Shazam's red and white tights, others are looking further ahead. Given James Gunn and Peter Safran's placement as the new heads of DC Studios, the fate of the electrifying team of heroes is largely unknown. Levi has stated that he has no plans on leaving the DCU whilst reassuring fans that both Gunn and Safran have a solid plan in mind for the rest of the cinematic franchise. "He understands world-building, he understands how to do right by the canon and also by the characters and also by the audience. And [Safran]'s there to -- he's an incredible diplomat and business person," Levi said.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods crashes into theaters on March 17.
