Fans of Shazam! were in for a different take on the Seven Deadly Sins. The film depicted them as horrific monsters in the DCEU 2019 film and, according to director David F. Sandberg, the studio was into the idea.During a recent Shazam! quarantine watch party, Sandberg revealed the behind-the-scenes details on Twitter. He wrote, "People often ask me if it was hard to get the studio on board with this horror scene. It was actually the studio that told me to 'lean into my horror roots'. I was happy to oblige."RELATED: One of Shazam!'s Funniest Lines Was Improvised by Zachary Levi

The scene in question showed the Seven Deadly Sins emerging from smoke in a boardroom and tearing apart the suited men and women gathered around the table. In terms of violence, the scene was relatively mild, but for a film meant to be lighter than the standard fare of the DCEU, audiences seem to agree that it was dark.

The Seven Deadly Sins unleashed by Doctor Sivana in Shazam! differ slightly from their comic book counterparts: the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man, who are more villainous than monstrous in Geoff John's post New-52 Justice League series.

Sandberg is more than a little familiar with the horror genre. His directorial debut, Lights Out and his follow-up, Annabelle: Creation, were both notable successes, which likely pushed the studio to have faith in him with regard to the horror elements of Shazam!

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vásquez and Marta Milans as Rosa Vásquez. The film is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
