With Shazam! opening in theaters everywhere in less than a month, director David F. Sandberg hopes to return with producer Peter Safran to helm a potential sequel.

After previously working together on 2017's Annabelle: Creation, Safran and Sandberg expressed a desire to continue their creative collaboration in the DC Extended Universe for a sequel.

"Absolutely. It's easy for me to say, 'I'm on board,'" declared Safran in an interview with ComicBook.com before posing the same question to Sandberg.

"Let's do it." Sandberg quickly added.

So far, the next DCEU film seems well on its way to a sequel. A few weeks ahead of its release, the movie already has most positive early reviews and seems on track for at least a $40 million opening weekend. Any likely Shazam! sequel could also feature Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Black Adam, the Shazam nemesis who's been rumored to have a film of his own.

Previously, Safran had also served as a producer on this past year's Aquaman, directed by James Wan. Prior to helming the fellow DCEU film, Wan had produced Sandberg's Annabelle: Creation with Safran as well as Sandberg's breakout film Lights Out. With Safran looking to continue his professional relationship with Warner Bros., hopefully Sandberg will join him.

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Zachary Levi as Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the ancient wizard Shazam, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vásquez and Marta Milans as Rosa Vásquez. The film hits theaters April 5.
