Here's Why the Shazam! Trailer Changes Batman & Superman's Costumes

As 2018 comes to a close, director David F. Sandberg's upcoming DC film Shazam! is now just over three months away. However, some details tying the film to Warner Bros.' greater DC film universe are only now getting attention.

Specifically, young actor Joshua Erenberg (The Green Hornet, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) pointed out in a tweet to Sandberg that, in the Shazam! trailer, the outfit worn by a toy of Superman, as well as the Batman logo on a child's backpack, are not consistent with what we've seen in the DCEU so far.

"Ok, so I saw Aquaman in IMAX. We got the Shazam! trailer. I noticed some things I have questions about," Erenberg explained. "[David F. Sandberg], Superman doesn't wear the undies in the DCEU and that isn't the DCEU Batman logo. So is this film outside of the universe? Is it being rebooted? Or...?"

Sandberg then responded with a rather humorous tweet of his own, in which he explained that it's actually all part of a larger, multi-film plot thread.

"In the movie those toy designers all get fired for taking creative license," said Sandberg. "It's a big plot point that sets up the villain of Shazam 2."

Of course, it's apparent that this is mostly just a joke on Sandberg's part (in spite of how interesting the prospect of Billy Batson battling disgruntled toy designers is.) Even so, it certainly will be interesting to see just how the film addresses its connection (or lack thereof) to the current DCEU as we know it, given the uncertainty that has been surrounding the franchise as of late.

At any rate, the director seemingly hasn't lost a step as far as his sense of humor is concerned, which likely bodes well for those eagerly anticipating Shazam!'s release.
