Following the success of the first Shazam!, its upcoming sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, has promised fans that the action and heart would be double what came before. But even though the film has seemingly taken on a slightly more mature tone, that doesn't mean there isn't a fair share of laughs for younger audiences and Easter eggs for die-hard fans. However, one Easter egg shown in the trailer may have totally broken the canon and made Billy Batson's universe even more terrifying.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods follows the Shazam Family as they enjoy being superheroes. But as the months continued, it became clear that Billy Batson and his family were only getting older, and eventually, everyone would drift apart. The realization was enough to send Billy to speak to a pediatrician while in his Shazam form, which led to a hilarious moment. But as the pediatrician motioned Billy to look at the play corner he had for children, an Easter egg could be seen that was none other than the Annabelle doll.

In The Conjuring and Annabelle films, the doll became a vessel for a powerful demonic force that preyed on the misery of its owners. And while many directors tried their hand at bringing an Annabelle film to life, Shazam!'s David F. Sandberg tackled the origin of the doll in Annabelle: Creation. Since then, he's proudly shown his love for the franchise, with the most recent nod being its appearance in Fury of the Gods. But if the Easter egg were to get taken literally, how would this affect the canon?

Annabelle, as a character, has had its roots planted firmly in the demonic for years. Should The Conjuring Universe exist as an extension of Annabelle in the DC Expanded Universe, that would imply that there would need to be a collection of superpowered heroes necessary to combat these threats, including Zatanna and Constantine. And since Annabelle is a character born from a ritual, it would also work well in a world of magic, like the one that brought a being such as Shazam into existence. Considering magic is one of the areas of the DCEU that has yet to get explored, it's a fun way to tease that magic may be closer than audiences think.

That said, from a literal standing, it's nice to see Sandberg not forget where he got his start and how horror had helped shape him as a director. And as such, it could even be that he could implement more horror elements as the franchise matures. In the past, audiences faced The Seven Deadly Sins, while this film will see dragons facing off against Billy and his team. Some of the scariest elements of Greek mythology are even the monsters that permeate some of its best stories. They may not be traditional horror creatures, but they could offer some brief scares for the audience.

Realistically, the odds of The Conjuring Universe playing a role in the DCEU is unlikely. But having an Easter egg nod to the director's previous works is a great way to have the mind of a theorist constantly speculating and finding connections to franchises. The moment also tells audiences to pay close attention to the film as there could be even more surprises within each frame.

To see Annabelle's DCEU debut, Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters Dec. 21.
