Unfortunately, Shazam! only made $364 million at the worldwide box-office which is a fairly lackluster return for a superhero flick. However, it was beloved by critics and audiences alike and, as such, Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel that will see Zachary Levi return in his bright red suit.

The first film ended with the titular hero, Billy Batson, bringing his foster family into the fold, turning them into heroes, before defeating Doctor Sivana. It's a heartwarming conclusion to his arc and nicely sets up the future of the franchise. With that said, here are five things that we want to see in the sequel and five things that we don't want to see.

10 Want: Superman Returns

At the end of Shazam!, Billy Batson brings Superman to lunch to meet his foster-brother, Freddy Freeman. We see Henry Cavill's iconic suit but the shot doesn't show anything above the shoulders so as to hide the fact that the person in the suit isn't actually Henry Cavill. However, the sequel would be the perfect film to reintroduce his Superman to the DCEU.

The problem with this is that he could steal the limelight and so, if he does appear in Shazam 2, it should either be in the form of a cameo or as a smaller side-character role. The film could open with the meeting that Billy had to orchestrate Superman's appearance or he could simply act as a mentor for the young and upcoming superhero team.

9 Don't Want: Batson's Biological Mother

One of the best parts of Shazam! was its representation of foster care. Rather than depicting it as something bleak and horrible that pales in comparison to a biological family, Warner Bros. instead opted to portray adoption as something just as good. Billy Batson's mother abandoned him when he was young and so he spent his entire life searching for her, constantly running from the families that he was placed within.

However, when he did find her, she revealed the truth in a harsh manner but, in doing so, she allowed him to get closure and move on to embrace his new family. This arc was completed magnificently, and there's no need to go back to it because of this.

8 Want: Black Adam

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's Black Adam film is set to release in December 2021 and hopefully, this isn't a one-time role, as the character has the potential to be a big player in the DCEU. He's not inherently a villain, acting more as a protector of his nation, much like Marvel's Namor.

As such, him appearing in the Shazam! sequel would be incredibly fitting. However, there are other villains and characters that should take the spotlight in Shazam 2 and so The Rock's Black Adam would be best placed in a post-credit scene or a cameo, setting up a potential Black Adam Vs Shazam film.

7 Don't Want: More Flashbacks

Shazam 2 should avoid further flashbacks to keep things progressing rather than constantly looking back. In the first movie, Dr. Sivana and Batson's origins are depicted through flashbacks that serve to highlight the parallel between their stories and how the two ended up on diverging paths.

With whatever villain they use in the sequel, they should have them already established or set them up in the present, rather than rooting their origins in the past, to keep the flow and the momentum going. Batson's journey from the end of Shazam! is what will be most interesting for the writers to delve into, and looking back could harm that.

6 Want: Mr. Mind

In Shazam!'s mid-credits scene, there is a robotic voice speaking to Sivana, saying that he still has a part to play. This mysterious character said: "The seven realms are about to be ours" and then the shot pans to show a small worm on the window in his cell. This worm is Mr. Mind, one of Shazam's more obscure villains.

He isn't a human trapped in a worm's body and he isn't a worm who has gained consciousness - Mr. Mind is from Venus. Hopefully, in the sequel, this strange villain will play a large part so that more of his nefarious plot can come to the surface.

5 Don't Want: Shazam Family Sidelined

The last film surprised fans with an incredibly early debut of the Shazam Family when they all grabbed the staff of Merlin and were given the same powers as Billy Batson. They helped out in the fight against Sivana but the entire moment was somewhat convoluted and a little drawn out, but the actual actors portraying the older versions of the kids did a phenomenal job just as Zachary Levi managed to.

Sidelining them would be a mistake, as the Shazam films could be more akin to team-ups than solo movies going forward, with an interesting family dynamic that has only really been attempted by Fox with the Fantastic Four and Pixar with the Incredibles (which are essentially the Fantastic Four, anyway).

4 Want: Tawky Tawny

Warner Bros. has already proven with the appearance of Mr. Mind in Shazam! that they are fully willing to embrace the weird and wacky of the comics. Tawky Tawny wouldn't be out of place in a world that has evil talking worms from Venus. For the uninitiated, this humanoid Tiger was, at first, a stuffed tiger doll but he was brought to life by Lord Satanus to aid the Shazam Family in their fight against Blaze.

As Mr. Mind is likely to be the villain in the sequel, this origin story might not work unless he is animated to help them take down the villainous worm from afar. However, Warner Bros. changed a lot with the first film and so they could easily do so for the sequel.

3 Don't Want: Re-Cast Superman

If they do indeed utilize Superman in Shazam 2, it should be Henry Cavill or not at all. The cameo in the first film wasn't the same actor in the suit but they cut off at the head for a reason - Cavill is still interested in playing the Kryptonian. Due to that, he should be brought in for the part, whether it be a small role such as acting as a mentor for the team or if he simply has a second cameo in the beginning.

Re-casting Superman in this film would also completely break continuity if Cavill ever does return in a future film, be it Justice League 2 or any of the solo films coming up such as The Flash or Aquaman 2. If Shazam 2's script does indeed call for Superman's presence, he has to return or the character should be cut from the narrative entirely.

2 Want: Better Action

One of the biggest criticisms of Shazam! lay with its action sequences. The gold standard set by Zack Snyder in Batman vs Superman has ultimately raised the bar for the entire genre and Shazam! unfortunately wavered, feeling a little outdated in its depiction of superhero battles, especially when it came to juggling multiple characters all fighting at once.

As such, the sequel needs to step it up when it comes to choreography and the way in which action scenes are shot, to truly bring them into the modern-day superhero genre. The family is a bunch of kids who get to inhabit the body of superpowered adults and, as such, they won't fight as Batman does, but that doesn't mean that the sequences can't be more interestingly shot or feature better use of their powers.

1 Don't Want: Serious Tone

Whilst DC has gained a reputation for being the Yin to Marvel's Yang, with darker films like Joker and The Dark Knight, Shazam! was a breath of fresh air that offered something different from the competing comics company.

As such, Shazam 2 should continue to carry that torch by keeping the lighter tone of its predecessor. That's not to say that it can't have emotion or depth, as the first film did, but that it should be a comedy first rather than a brooding drama.
