Shazam! Fury of the Gods' new prequel comic reveals how Mary Marvel talked Billy Batson into seeing a therapist.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods Special: Shazamily Matters #1 is a new 96-page anthology one-shot written by a number of the actors appearing in the upcoming DC film. One of the entries, "Leadership Qualities," comes from writer Henry Gayden, artist Scott Godlewski, colorist Alex Guimaráes and letterer Saida Temofonte. In the story, Billy is trying to figure out how to lead his family; although, he's getting most of his information from various videos and websites he finds online. At one point, he tries to give Freddy some advice only to then be called out for using a quote from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
When Billy tries to call a meeting that nobody shows up to, he begins questioning whether he's really worthy of the powers he's been given. At that point, Mary Marvel makes herself known and gives Billy some much-needed advice. "You're trying so hard to change us, but maybe you need to work on yourself a little first," she says. "Have you ever thought about talking to someone?"
How Shazamily Matters Plays Into Shazam! Fury of the Gods
The end of "Leadership Qualities" sees Billy walk into a doctor's office for children, while the words "To be continued in Shazam: Fury of the Gods" are placed prominently on the issue's final page. Promotional material for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, which is scheduled to release theatrically in the United States on March 17, 2023, sees Billy speaking to a doctor played by P.J. Byrne about some of the issues he's been having since the events of the first film.
