Shazam! Fury of the Gods actor Marta Milans, who plays Billy Batson’s foster mother Rosa Vasquez, reacted to the DC Universe sequel’s negative critical reception.

After the film's world premiere, the Zachary Levi-led blockbuster wasn’t able to impress critics, who described the film as “predictable” and “disappointing,” prompting Milans to defend Fury of the Gods against the inflammatory comments. "Our movie is better than good!! It’s great!!!," the actor wrote. "Go watch for yourselves little hating trolls on the internet don’t mean anything.. keep hating out there and we will keep making great stories for everybody. See you in the movie theater! Shazamily is waiting for you!"

Milans isn’t the only Shazam! Fury of the Gods cast member who addressed the sequel’s poor critical reception. Golden Globe nominee Rachel Zegler, who plays Anthea in the sequel, recently slammed “senselessly mean” reviews while encouraging viewers to give the movie a chance by boasting about its current audience score rating of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, Levi also had the chance to call out toxic DC fans for causing unnecessary negativity and attacking those who "don't agree with them on other comic book movies."

Shazam’s Future in James Gunn’s DC Universe

Following the theatrical release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the hero’s future in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe remains unclear at the moment, despite the sequel’s post-credits scene hinting at the character’s potential new path. Regardless of all the uncertainty surrounding Shazam’s role in the DCU, Levi remained positive by assuring fans that the franchise is in good hands due to Gunn’s special understanding of world-building and comic books.

Director David F. Sandberg previously confirmed that Fury of the Gods’ story won’t contradict with any of Gunn and Safran’s current plans for the relaunching of DC’s cinematic franchise. "[Shazam] definitely won’t [have a future] if people don’t go see the movie," the filmmaker said. “What I’ve been told is that there’s nothing in the Shazam films that contradict the future plans for DC. So the possibility for more Shazam is there and if that’s what you want your best bet is to go see the film.”

After defeating Dr. Sivana and the Seven Deadly Sins in the 2019 film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods features Billy Batson and the Shazam family taking on next level threats with the arrival of the Daughters of Atlas, which consists of Zegler’s Anthea, Helen Mirren’s Hespera, and Lucy Liu’s Kalypso. The antagonists seek to reclaim an ancient weapon that will help them destroy the world.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now playing in theaters worldwide.
