Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg has taken to social media to denounce the film's recent reshoot rumors.

"No. I've seen reports that Shazam is being 'retooled' but it's not true. The cut has been locked for quite some time and we're doing final mix, color and vfx right now," the filmmaker wrote during an Instagram Q&A. "Everyone is happy with the film and we're not going to work longer on it just because of the release date shift. They figured Aquaman's previous date was better for us and that's the reason we moved. Definitely not shooting more."

Shazam Reshoots

In August, news broke that Shazam 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were moving to 2023. For the former, this marks its fifth move. Originally scheduled to hit theaters on April 1, 2022, Fury of the Gods was delayed to Nov. 4 and then to June 2, 2023, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. When pandemic restrictions began to ease and movie theaters reopened, Warner Bros. moved the film up to Dec. 16, 2022, before delaying it to Dec. 21. The sequel will now premiere on March 17, 2023.

Many, including Sandberg, saw Fury of the God's most recent delay as a practical move since the film was scheduled to debut on the same day as James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water. "While I'm an impatient bastard who wants people to see [Shazam 2] as soon as possible (the film will be fully done in just a few weeks), the move makes sense since Avatar was taking all IMAX/PLF screens," Sandberg wrote on Twitter in August. "Fury of the Gods is a big movie & should be seen big!"

However, Cameron's Avatar sequel may not be the only reason for Fury of the Gods' recent delay. In August, it was also reported that the Shazam and Aquaman sequels moved due to Warner Bros. Discovery's financial issues. According to a writer with The Hollywood Reporter, the company is experiencing financial hardship and a challenging transitional period following the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery in April. These struggles may have forced the company to move films like Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2 to 2023 to spread out marketing and distribution costs.

The original Shazam! also held a Spring release when it premiered in 2019. The film grossed more than $366 million at the box office against a $100 million budget and received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Fury of the Gods sees the return of Zachary Levi and the rest of the Shazam family while introducing newcomers like Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and West Side Story's Rachel Zegler.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now scheduled to hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
