Warner Bros.' Shazam! performed reasonably well at the box office and was widely praised for bringing new energy into the DC Extended Universe. After facing multiple delays throughout development, it appears the sequel, Shazam! The sequel was announced in 2019 with David F. Sandberg returning to direct. However, the film has faced a number of delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Shazam! Fury of the Gods was originally scheduled to hit theaters on April 1, 2022, but has been delayed twice, with the most recent date given being June 2, 2023.

Shazam! centers on Billy Batson, a 14-year-old foster child chosen by the wizard, Shazam, to bear his name and powers. As Batson struggles to master the power of the ancients -- Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury -- he is forced to confront Sivana, who plays host to demons known as the Seven Deadly Sins. In the end, Batson shares his newfound powers with his foster family: Freddy Freeman, Darla Dudley, Mary Bromfield, Eugene Choi and Pedro Peña.
