For any movie as crazy Deadpool 2 the bar is going to be set pretty high for the strangest character in the cast. And yet, Shatterstar still managed to take the cake -- presumably by slicing it with his weird double-bladed swords.

Shatterstar is only in the film briefly, but he left a clear impression with viewers. So how did such a weird character end up in a major motion blockbuster, and how did all that weirdness stay intact?

Shatterstar on the page

Shatterstar is one of those characters whose origins started out complicated and then only grew more complicated throughout the years. The long and short of his history is that he is a genetically-engineered gladiator designed to compete in death matches for a dystopic future alien world's entertainment. While he has mutant DNA that lets him shoot energy beams through his swords and teleport, he barely ever even uses those powers.

While Shatterstar was always known to have a link to the X-Man Longshot, but finding out what that mystery link was didn't make anything any clearer. It turned out that Longshot was Shatterstar's clone, but through time-traveling shenanigans, Longshot was actually Shatterstar's father. Feel weird? Well, now you're getting the gist of a typical Shatterstar story.

Shatterstar on the screen

Since he was originally introduced in the comics on the super team X-Force, it only makes sense that he would answer the call when Deadpool put the militant mutants together on screen for the first time. In Deadpool 2 the titular hero realizes he needs some backup and puts out a call for mutants (and Peter) to audition their abilities. It at the audition that Shatterstar first introduces himself, and therein gives his moment in the spotlight.

After introducing himself as Rusty, Shatterstar gives Deadpool a glimpse into his complicated background as an alien from Mojoworld. He describes his powers as being like Deadpool's (but better) and doesn't make any mention of the energy beams or portals the comic book version can create. While Shatterstar is certainly a highly adept swordsman in the vein of Deadpool, the idea that his powers might be regenerative in nature would actually be unique to the film. That could have made for an interesting point of comparison, but unfortunately, audiences never got to see Shatterstar in action.

Shatterstar No More!

Deadpool 2 X-Force

Spoilers, but Shatterstar died well before he ever got the chance to do anything cool. X-Force leaping into action sets the stage for their grisly deaths scant minutes after their debut in the film, and Shatterstar's is perhaps one of the grisliest. When he parachutes out of a moving plane the air currents from an active helicopter's blades draw him in. The result is that he is immediately eviscerated by the blades and turned into a cloud of red mist.

If his powers truly were like Deadpool's but better it would seem that Deadpool could not survive the total annihilation of his body. Shatterstar's time on the big screen was cut short (along with everything else about him) and audiences never really got to see much else. Fans should cross their fingers and swords that he will appear again, but as of now, there don't appear to be any such plans.
