The newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is more than just a story about magic and martial arts. It's a story about a broken family, centered on a grieving man who loses his wife and tries to recover her at all costs.

Xu Wenwu, MCU's new rendition of the Mandarin, leaves his life as the head of a criminal empire behind when he marries the beautiful Ying Li. But after the Iron Gang murders her, he takes up the Ten Rings once again, and his children suffer the consequences. The relationship between Shang-Chi and his sister, Xialing, is also torn apart in the process. Their history reminds fans of other siblings in the MCU. Some have a happier, more harmonious dynamic, others are even worse.

After Ying Li dies, Xu Wenwu decides to turn Shang-Chi into an assassin, exposing him to brutal training techniques. Shang-Chi accepts this, but when he is fourteen, he is given his first assignment--to avenge the death of his mother. He promises Xialing he will return in three days. After assassinating the target, though, he's horrified at what he has become and never goes back, leaving his sister behind.

Xialing grows up alone and unwanted. Their father refuses to include her in his criminal empire, and she's not allowed to train with the men. Acknowledging that she'll never receive help from anyone, Xialing teaches herself to fight, then runs away from the Ten Rings, starting her own business in Macao. The siblings are reunited ten years later, though their relationship remains strained.

9 Thor and Loki Take Sibling Rivalry To A Godlike Level

Thor and Loki on Earth in Thor Ragnarok

Thor and Loki are the first pair of siblings that joined the MCU. They're also perhaps the most iconic. Loki grows up in Thor's shadow, while Thor starts out as arrogant and bloodthirsty. Knowing his brother is unsuited to the Asgardian throne, Loki hatches a plan to prove this to their father Odin. Thor is exiled to Earth, but everything goes south when Loki finds out he's adopted--a Jotun, not an Asgardian. As his plans spiral into madness, he attempts to commit suicide and later falls into Thanos's clutches.

Their relationship starts to mend when they fight together side by side to avenge their mother, Frigga. By the time Avengers: Infinity War rolls around, they are closer than before, with Thor having learned how to be more appreciative and Loki overcoming many of his earlier faults. Unfortunately, Thanos kills Loki shortly after that.

8 Thor and Hela Set Aside All Bonds Of Blood In Their Battle For The Throne

Thor, Loki, and Hela

Thor and Loki aren't the only troubled siblings in the Asgardian royal family. Odin's firstborn, Hela the Goddess of Death acts as his general throughout countless campaigns of conquest. She becomes more and more bloodthirsty, while Odin loses his taste for wars. Finally, Odin seals her in Hel, binding her prison to his own life force and erasing her existence from Asgard's history.

Odin fails to mentions Hela to Thor until minutes before his death. At first, Thor and Loki are unprepared to face their powerful sister, but Thor ultimately confronts her in Asgard. He loses an eye to their battle, even if he manages to channel his lightning without the use of his hammer. Interestingly enough, there's barely any interaction between Hela and Loki. Perhaps the writers didn't know what to do with the fact that Hela is Loki's daughter in the comics. Either way, there are no bonds between these siblings, only enmity.

7 Gamora and Nebula Are The Adopted Daughters Of The Mad Titan

Before the Snap, Thanos travels the universe in his mad quest to create balance. He invades planets and wipes out half their populations. On two such worlds, he adopts Gamora and Nebula. The two girls are trained as assassins, their bodies cybernetically enhanced and honed into lethal weapons.

In an even more brutal twist, Thanos has the sisters fight each other. Gamora always wins, and when this happens, Thanos replaces an extra body part on Nebula with another cybernetic implant. Because of this, the relationship between the two is focused on one-sided hatred. Gamora seems to care about Nebula, but Nebula resents Gamora for never yielding a battle. The sisters eventually begin to mend their broken bond. When Thanos tortures Nebula in front of Gamora, she agrees to take him to the Soul Stone. Similarly, Nebula is grief-stricken when she realizes Gamora's fate. She now treasures Gamora as a true sister and is able to convince Gamora's alternate self of her change of heart.

6 Yelena and Natasha Are Black Widows Raised As Sisters

A newer addition to the MCU universe, the likeable Yelena Belova is raised in the Red Room, like Natasha Romanov. The two spend three years in Ohio as the children of Melina Vostokoff and Alexei Shostakov. After the operation ends, the young Natasha desperately tries to protect Yelena. She's not really successful.

Years later, Natasha manages to escape the Red Room, recruited by SHIELD through Clint Barton. Yelena is left behind, mind-controlled by General Dreykov. They reunite after the Red Dust frees Yelena from Dreykov's manipulations. By the end of Black Widow, their sisterly bond is restored, and Yelena mourns Natasha's death in Avengers: Endgame.

5 Pietro And Wanda Are Twins Orphaned In The War-Torn Sokovia

Twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff appear as antagonists in Avengers: Age of Ultron. They are incredibly close and go through Hydra experimentation together in order to receive their powers. Wanda's involvement is instrumental to the creation of Ultron, and later, the two work with the newly awakened AI in his quest to defeat the heroes.

It is only after Wanda realizes Ultron's true goal--to obliterate humanity--that the twins change sides. In the ensuing battle, their aid is invaluable. Pietro saves Clint's life, though at the cost of his own. Wanda feels her brother's death. Grief-stricken, she loses control of her powers and obliterates all the drones around her.

4 Tommy and Billy Maximoff Are Twins Created Through Chaos Magic

Vision and Wanda with Tommy and Billy

After Pietro's death, Wanda joins the Avengers and bonds with Vision. Their close relationship remains next to intact even if they're on opposing sides in the Avengers Civil War. Both are killed by Thanos, but only Wanda returns in the Blip. When the battle is over, Wanda's increasing grief urges her to retire to Westview, where she and Vision had bought a plot of land. Her chaos magic rushes out of control, creating the Hex--a form of an alternate reality where her own version of Vision is alive.

Wanda and Vision have two children - Tommy and Billy Maximoff. The twins grow up very quickly, with both exhibiting special powers. Billy inherits his mother's telepathy, while Tommy has superspeed like his uncle. The children are apparently killed when Wanda drops the Hex, but later, Wanda hears their voices while studying the Darkhold.

3 T'challa And Shuri Are Wakandan Royalty Fighting For Their Country

Shuri and T'challa

First appearing in Captain America: Civil War, T'challa becomes king of Wakanda after the death of his father. Unlike many other MCU siblings, he and his sister Shuri don't have a real rivalry. She's dedicated to scientific pursuits, and she's the genius behind much of the technology he uses, including the Black Panther habit.

Their good-natured ribbing is a refreshing change considering the heavy family dynamics in other movies.

2 Siblings Sam and Sarah Argue And Bond Over Financial Troubles

Sam and Sarah Wilson

The younger sister of Sam Wilson, Sarah appears in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. She's just a normal woman trying to raise her two children on her own. She often bickers with Sam over the fate of the boat they inherited from their parents.

Sam may be the Falcon and the newest Captain America, but she's an anchor of normality in a world of superheroes, much like Katy Chen is in Shang-Chi.

1 Cooper, Lila, and Nathaniel Barton Are Hawkeye's Children

Avengers: Endgame - Clint and Lila Barton

Hawkeye may not get a lot of attention in the MCU, but what he does get is a family. In Age of Ultron, fans learn he is married to Laura Barton. They have three children. The whole family--with the exception of Hawkeye--dies in the Snap.

Not much is known about them, although Lila is shown to have been taught archery by her father.
