By any standard, Shang-Chi is one of the greatest fighters in the Marvel Universe. Throughout his comic book history, the Master of Kung Fu has lent a helping hand to the likes of Iron Fist and Daredevil, even giving them a few pointers along the way. However, One of Shang-Chi's most impressive accomplishments was teaching Spider-Man an entirely new way of fighting.

Before the start of 2011's Spider-Island event, Spider-Man faced off against Alistair Smythe, the Spider-Slayer, and his Spider-Sense wielding insect goons in Amazing Spider-Man #654 by Dan Slott and Fred Van Lente. Parker, overpowered and understanding what he must do to win, retreats to Horizon Labs and creates a device that disrupts the sixth sense of his opponents. Spider-Man returns to the battle with hopes of activating the newly acquired device.

Spider-Man then fights Scorpion, and during the battle, the disruption device on his wrist is damaged by Scorpion's tail. Unable to detonate the device remotely, Spider-Man presses the button at close range. As a result, Spider-Man, the Spider-Slayer, Scorpion and the rest of the insect-themed villains lose their Spider-Sense abilities.

Having grown dependent on his Spider-Sense, Spider-Man immediately felt the ramifications of this, which were also noticed by others, too. Out of concern for her friend, Julia Carpenter, the new Madame Web, brought Shang-Chi to observe Spider-Man do battle with a Mandrill-controlled Spider-Woman. Madame Web makes a note of how Spider-Man is fighting without his Spider-Sense, and Shang-Chi notices that his fighting style leaves much to be desired. Madame Web makes it clear that, for Parker to be ready for the events of Spider-Island, he must be adequately trained by Shang-Chi.

After the battle between Spider-Man and Spider-Woman is over, Shang-Chi makes his presence known and approaches Spidey. Shang-Chi comments on Spider-Man's unique fighting style, leading to Spider-Man asking Shang-Chi if he could teach him proper Kung Fu. Shang-Chi agrees, and they set out towards the Hai-Dai Training Facility to begin training.

It's through this training that Shang-Chi prepares Spider-Man for the events of Spider-Island. For the next several weeks, Shang-Chi puts Spider-Man through rigorous training, giving him an inhibitor collar to keep him from using his other abilities. This special training teaches Spider-Man how to let go of his reliance on his Spider-Sense and let the flow of battle guide his next move.

The second half of the training involved assisting Spider-Man in inventing his own form of martial arts that played off of the strengths of his Spider-powers. In Slott and Stefano Caselli's Amazing Spider-Man #666, Shang-Chi would prepare Spidey to begin the ultimate test in discovering his own fighting style. Dubbed the Way of The Spider, the new martial arts style combined all of Parker's fighting experience and rolled it together into one comprehensive technique.

The ultimate test of the Way of The Spider came in an exhibition match against Madame Web. Spider-Man keeps up with Web during the battle, demonstrating that the training has paid off. Once Madame Web sees that Parker is almost ready for what is to come, she lets him know that the training needed to happen if he had any hope of surviving the upcoming challenges. Madame Web also takes this time to let Spider-Man know that he has another move in his arsenal that he learned through the Way of The Spider called the Killing Stroke, a powerful attack strong enough to completely render an opponent lifeless.

Although Spider-Man wound up getting his Spider-Sense back halfway through Spider Island, learning the Way of the Spider would prove to have a long-lasting impact on Spider-Man's approach to fighting. Shang-Chi taking Spider-Man in and honing his skill taught Parker that the art of fighting is just as critical as the brains behind the brawn.
