Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu shared his excitement that Destin Daniel Cretton would be directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Liu, who starred in Cretton's Marvel Cinematic Director debut, posted a tweet congratulating Cretton. In his tweet, Liu recounts attending SDCC with Cretton, remarking on how far the duo has come since then the 2019 announcement of Shang-Chi. "IT'S F**KING HAPPENING BROTHER!" Liu wrote.
Fans replied to the tweet rejoicing at the prospect of seeing Shang-Chi cross over into the rest of the MCU, but one response stands out in particular. One user asked about information on the sequel to Legend of the Ten Rings, to which Liu simply replied with a GIF featuring the message "Stay Tuned!". A Shang-Chi sequel is currently in preproduction with Liu returning as the titular hero and Cretton set to reprise his role as director, but the title and release date are yet to be announced.
Marvel Studios also signed a multi-year deal with Cretton where in addition to the Shang-Chi sequel and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, he will write and direct an unspecified Disney+ series. Cretton will also help produce another Marvel Cinematic Universe venture in the form of the upcoming Wonder-Man series for Disney+.
Liu and Cretton made history in 2021 as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was praised as a celebration of Asian culture in blockbuster form, elevated by engaging fight choreography and deep, layered characters. Despite opening in theaters amidst worldwide pandemic restrictions, it raked in a total of $432.2 million worldwide, the highest gross ever earned by a film opening on Labor Day weekend.
Marvel Studios has yet to announce which director will helm the sequel to Kang Dynasty, Avengers: Secret Wars. The sixth Avengers movie is slated to be the end of the MCU's Multiverse Saga and the conclusion of Phase 6. Anthony and Joe Russo, directors of both Infinity War and Endgame, have stated they will not be returning to direct Secret Wars. Both Avengers: the Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars will release in 2025 with Cretton's film set to debut on May 25 and Secret Wars to release on Nov. 27.
