Marvel Cinematic Universe fans believe the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will include a number of superhero appearances, including the eponymous hero of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, who made his debut earlier this year.

While answering questions on GQ's "Actually Me," Shang-Chi star Simu Liu responded to rumors that he will appear in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. "Even if I were in that movie, which I'm not, there is no way in hell that I would ever say it out loud. That's all I can really say, right?"

Part of the reason fans believe Shang-Chi will return is due to the appearance of Wong -- Doctor Strange's friend and ally -- in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The character appeared throughout the film, including the post-credits scene examining the origins of the Ten Rings. It is currently uncertain when Liu's superhero will appear next in the MCU.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the return of Benedict Cumberbatch's Master of the Mystic Arts and Scarlet Witch. Alongside them comes America Chavez, who will be the newest addition to the MCU. All three appeared in the recently released trailer for the film, originally premiering with Spider-Man: No Way Home as the post-credits clip. Moreover, it is speculated that one of the figures that appears in the trailer is none other than Strange Supreme, who was introduced in the Disney+ series, What If...?

It's worth noting that there could be more than just the three superheroes appearing in the film. Cumberbatch previously cast doubt on whether the film, despite its title, was actually a Doctor Strange film. When asked, he teased, "Well...yeah that's part of the problem. There's a lot of stuff going on in it... It's like, do I have a character arc in this? Is it working?" He concluded, "No, there's great stuff for me to do. It's very busy. It's called The Multiverse of Madness, and it's bonkers."

In addition to Cumberbatch's statement, a casting call for Multiverse of Madness seemingly hinted at the return of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, who formed a partnership in Disney+'s Hawkeye series. The call sheet listed roles for a "Novice Archer" and "Archer." It's uncertain whether or not stars Hailee Steinfeld and Jeremy Renner will appear in the Doctor Strange film.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set for release on May 6, 2022.
