Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a completely life-changing event, both personally and professionally, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu made the transition with a little help from his friend Awkwafina.

During a press conference attended by CBR that featured the cast and crew of Shang-Chi, Liu recalled that it was his co-star Awkwafina that helped ease his anxieties about accepting the superhero role. Claiming to suffer from imposter syndrome on a daily basis after being cast, Liu credited his final screen test with Awkwafina for easing him into the role.

"My nerves were sky high. I was an actor from Toronto, and I really had never allowed myself to imagine being a part of the MCU. I mean, it's the craziest dream that someone can possibly dream," Liu admitted. "[Awkwafina] did such a great job of putting me at ease and just being in the moment with me and we had such a beautiful chemistry."

With Awkwafina portraying Shang-Chi's best friend Katy in the film, Liu favorably compared their on-screen chemistry to that of a bickering old couple. Liu similarly complimented the rest of the main cast and the opportunity to work with them in Sydney as another dream true for him. In addition to starring together in Shang-Chi, Liu made a guest appearance in Season 1 of Awkafina's Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, portraying Nora's grandfather in flashback sequences in Season 1 as the two actors took their real-life friendship to the small screen.

Directed and co-written by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
