Marvel Comics is planning to release a comic book series based around Shang-Chi prior to the release of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

As reported by The New York Times, the upcoming Shang-Chi miniseries will begin releasing in June and will be comprised of five issues. Gene Luen Yang, known for the graphic novel American Born Chinese, is slated to write the series with Philip Tan and Dike Ruan providing art. When discussing the upcoming series and its main character, Yang said, "I mean, it's Shang-Chi. He's probably the most prominent Asian — I guess he's Asian-American now since he's moved over here — Asian-American superhero."

In the same interview, Yang revealed a bit about the upcoming series' storyline, which will feature plenty of Shang-Chi's family, including his villainous father Zheng Zhu. "The basic idea that his father is a supervillain is still there; we don't want to overturn that, but we do want to add some nuance," He added, "Zheng Zhu has been around a very long time. He has other kids besides Shang-Chi, so we're going to explore some of those sibling relationships."

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Tony Leung and Awkwafina. The film hits theaters Feb. 12, 2021.
