20th Century Studios' Free Guy and Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will remain theatrical exclusives and will not premiere on Disney+ simultaneously.

The news came during the 2021 Q2 earnings call with Disney CEO Bob Chapek. The movies will play in theaters for 45 days before moving on to streaming and PVOD. Chapek did not specify if the release to Disney+ and digital retailers like Apple and Amazon would happen simultaneously or in different time frames.

The 45-day theatrical window is shorter than the traditional 90-day time period that used to be the industry standard. However, with the pandemic throwing the movie business into free fall, many studios have opted to abandon the 90-day window. Paramount films such as Mission: Impossible 7 and A Quiet Place Part II will also play in theaters for 45 days before moving to streaming, while some Universal films will play in theaters for as little as 17 days before moving to video on demand.

During the pandemic, Disney released some of its films in theaters and on Disney+ simultaneously, albeit with an extra $30 charge on top of the monthly subscription fee. Mulan was the first film to take this route — dubbed Disney+ Premier Access — followed by Raya and the Last Dragon. Disney plans to release the upcoming CruellaBlack Widow and Jungle Cruise this way as well.

Warner Bros. also took the simultaneous route, scheduling same-day premieres for Wonder Woman 1984 and its entire 2021 slate of films in theaters and on HBO Max. However, the studio said that this was a one-year strategy and, come 2022, major blockbusters like The Batman will remain theatrical exclusives. However, it will also be operating under a shorter window. Sony has not yet announced its theatrical plans, but it's movies are expected to have shorter windows as well.

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi. The film arrives in theaters Aug. 13.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Daniel Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tony Leung as Wenwu/The Mandarin, Awkwafina as Katy, Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, Meng'er Zhang as Xialing, Ronny Chieng as Jon Jon, Fala Chen as Jiang Li and Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist. The film arrives in theaters Sept. 3.
