Shaft Jackson Roundtree

As Entertainment Weekly notes, this will be the fifth Shaft film and a direct sequel to 2000's Shaft. If you're unfamiliar with the series, Isaac Hayes' iconic Shaft theme song tells you all you need to know.

John Shaft (Roundtree) is an African-American detective and an icon of the blaxploitation genre of the 1970s and 1980s. The character was created by screenwriter Ernest Tidyman in his 1970 crime novel Shaft. The novel was then the foundation for the series, which hit the big screen one year later. Roundtree starred as Shaft in the first three films: Shaft, Shaft's Big Score and Shaft in Africa. In 2000, Shaft's nephew John Shaft II (Samuel L. Jackson) appearedin the fourth film, also titled Shaft, which was more of a thriller than the original trilogy.

The next Shaft will follow the formula established in the 2000 reboot by keeping the same overall continuity and simply moving down the family line instead of totally reinventing the character.

Jessie Usher is set to star as John 'JJ' Shaft III, a cybersecurity FBI agent whose best friend is murdered. He teams up with his estranged father, Jackson's Shaft, and his grandfather, Roundtree's Shaft, to figure out what happened by navigating the Harlem underworld in a nod to the series' blaxploitation roots.

Usher most recently appeared in Creed II as Lil Maniac and in Independence Day: Resurgence. Work on the reboot begain when New Line Cinema acquired the rights to the Shaft franchise in 2015. After Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow wrote the script that same year, production on the film ended earlier this year.

Directed by Tim Story, Shaft stars Jessie Usher, Samuel L. Jackson, Richard Roundtree, Alexandra Shipp, Regina Hall and Method Man. The film is set to be released on June 14, 2019.
