New Line Cinema and "Predator" producer John Davis are planning to reboot the 1971 blaxploitation film "Shaft," TheWrap reports.

Based on Ernest Tidyman's 1970 novel of the same name, the original starred Richard Roundtree as John Shaft, a New York City private detective tasked with finding the missing daughter of a black mobster. It was followed by two sequels, 1972's "Shaft's Big Score" and 1973's "Shaft in Africa."

Director John Singleton's 2000 action thriller "Shaft" functioned as another sequel of sorts, with Samuel L. Jackson playing the nephew of the original John Shaft.

According to TheWrap, it's unknown whether New Line plans to start from scratch or build upon the established franchise as Singleton's film did.
