Everyone's favorite pig and sidekick, Hawk, has stood by Meliodas and his friends through thick and thin throughout the series, The Seven Deadly Sins. Like many of the other characters, Hawk, too, has a vibrant and interesting history about him. While he is a well-known and lovable character, he also unknowingly hides a mysterious and unsettling past.
Contrary to his bubbly and optimistic personality, Hawk came from a dark place and was born by someone with an even darker origin story. Most fans are aware of how Hawk became the pig he is today, but for those who may have missed it, here are ten things about Hawk's backstory that some may not have known about.
10 He Was Born In Purgatory
Like many other beings, Hawk is from a realm between the living world, where giants, druids, and fairies reside, and the afterlife, inhabited by the beings who have died and passed on. Unlike any other place, Purgatory is dark, chaotic, and filled with evil souls and dangerous monsters. Similar to Hell, Hawk's birthplace is unbearably hot. In Purgatory, the concept of time is drastically warped, and the conditions are far too brutal for mortals to survive.
9 He Has An Older Brother Named Wild
Some fans may have missed this fact about Hawk revealed in the series, but he has an older brother named Wild. Wild is an emotional boar-like creature from Purgatory. Wild has spent millions of years searching for his younger brother, who the Demon King took shortly after birth. He has challenged the Demon King on many occasions for his brother's return but has failed every time. It isn't until many years later when he meets Ban and Meliodas, that he learns Hawk is alive and well.
8 His Only Purpose Was To Serves As A Spy In The Living World
Kidnapped by the Demon King nearly right after being born, Hawk was sent into the living world to be a spy. The Demon King used Hawk to keep an eye on his eldest son, Meliodas.
He was chosen to be the spy as he was a creature that not only had a long life span but was strong enough to handle the task. Once in the living world, Hawk lost all memory of who he was before, his brother, Wild, and his former life in Purgatory.
7 He Is Allegedly Wandle's Reincarnation
Roughly 27 years before the start of the series, the Demon King had taken Hawk from his home in Purgatory to act as a spy. Knowing that Hawk is only 16-years-old, this act was committed many years before being born as a pig. Fan speculate that Hawk has taken many forms over the years to keep tabs on Meliodas' whereabouts and actions since his kidnapping. Before meeting Hawk, Meliodas had another animal companion, a bird named Wandle, whose personality, voice, and mannerisms were strangely similar to Hawk.
6 His Mother Was Known As The Mother Of Chaos
Arguably the oldest and most powerful creature in the entire series, Hawk's Mama is known to be the birth giver of all monsters and vampires. She is referred to as the Mother of Chaos, as the Demon King sealed Chaos into her vessel. Many believe she is filled with an unrivaled, immeasurable amount of darkness that instilled fear into the Demon Clan's hearts and the Goddess Clan alike. Not much is known about her whereabouts between the Sky Temple's battle and her initial introduction into the series as Hawk's Mama nearly 3000 years later.
5 He Inspired Meliodas To Open Up The Boar Hat
In an unknown forest, roughly 10 years before the start, Hawk was living happily with his mother when they stumbled upon Meliodas, who was lying unconscious. They brought him to safety in a cave near his home, Camelot, and when he awoke, he began introducing himself to Hawk. Hawk began reminiscing about his time at a restaurant known as Pig Leg and this, along with Meliodas' comparison of Hawk's Mama to a fortress, sparked the idea for the mobile pub, The Boar Hat.
4 His Real Name Is Mild
During his past life in Purgatory, Hawk went by another name. He was formerly known as Mild, brother of Wild, who was more boar-like rather than pig-like in appearance. Although Hawk has no memory of this, he was a fairly strong creature within Purgatory.
He only remembers his current identity as Hawk, but some theorize that he has been reincarnated several times before and has even taken the form of Meliodas' bird friend, Wandle. He even alluded to this reincarnation by saying he felt like a Dragon in a past life.
3 His Name Was Originally Translated As Hork
Hawk is known by many names, within the series, and even in real life. When the manga was originally translated, Hawk's name was Hork. This was done intentionally, as "hork" means to vomit or regurgitate, and Hawk, the Captain of the Order of Scraps Disposal, often cleaned up the puke of The Boar Hat customers after they attempted to eat one of Meliodas' unappetizing dishes. However, his name was changed to its Romanized version, Hawk, better to fit the series's setting and time period.
2 He Has Always Loved Scraps
The appreciation Hawk has for scraps is widely known among fans. However, the opening of The Boar Hat was not the start of his love for leftovers. Upon meeting Meliodas for the first time, Hawk mentioned that he frequently frequent a restaurant before called Pig Leg. He expressed that he would thoroughly enjoy the leftover food from there. Now, he takes pride in his position to finish the scraps at The Boar Hat, especially if they are ones left behind from the meals prepared by his favorite chef, Ban.
1 His Mother Isn't Actually A Pig
Hawk's Mama is a mystery to all who know her and even Hawk too. Some may find it obvious based on her green coloration, but she is not a pig species like her son Hawk. In actuality, she is a moss shell in the shape of a pig filled with Chaos' energy. She is the creator of many evil and powerful beings, including the Demon King and the Supreme Deity, who later sealed her away in the form that she is today. Although she is technically the mother of many creatures, she shows a special love and protectiveness over Hawk.
