Fans of Sesame Street are feeling shook after the Cookie Monster revealed his real name on social media.
The blue cookie-loving fiend has been a fan favorite on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) for decades, but up until now many viewers had believed he was simply called Cookie Monster. However, it seems that this time-honored title is actually just a nickname, as he revealed on Twitter, "Did you know me name is Sid?"
Despite dropping that truth bomb, Sid told his legion of fans, "Me still like to be called Cookie Monster." But having just shaken the foundations of many a childhood, Sid's tweet was met with astonishment from many followers.
He Still Like Cookies, Too
"I've known you for 45 years and am just learning this today. This is amazing," replied one user. Another wrote, "I did not know your name was Sid. You introduced yourself to me a Cookie Monster, and that is what I will call you. If you ask me to call you Sid, I will." Others handled it with a pinch of humor, with one asking if his British cousin the Biscuit Monster had a real name too.
However, it seems this isn't actually the first time that the Cookie Monster has told the world his true name. A number of Sesame Street fans were quick to point out that he'd already let this secret slip in a very public way in the song "The First Time Me Eat Cookie." In the song, which aired in a 2004 episode, the Cookie Monster sings: "In fact, back then, me think me name was Sid." A refresher on this piece of Sesame Street lore even surfaced in 2010, when the Cookie Monster announced everyone had been calling him by his nickname via the show's official Twitter. The blue monster was quoted as saying, "Me don’t remember me real name… maybe it was Sidney?"
The Cookie Monster is one of the original characters of Sesame Street, first appearing in Season 1 in 1969. PBS remained the show's only home until HBO began airing first-run episodes in 2016. Since then, PBS has only aired Sesame Street in reruns. The award-winning series became an HBO Max original when the streamer launched in 2020.
The new season of Sesame Street will air November 3 on HBO Max and PBS.
