WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Servant Season 2, Episode 1, "Doll," which aired Friday on Apple TV+.

M. Night Shyamalan's Servant has been very coy on what exactly the deal is with the Church of Lesser Saints. In Season 1, it was revealed that Aunt May and Uncle George were responsible for Leanne (Nell Tiger Free), eventually convincing her to leave the Turners and come back home to their cult.

Then, while it seemed they lost control of the runaway, it turns out that only they can help her harness her seemingly supernatural abilities. One of the big twists, however, is that it appears Aunt May was killed in a standoff with ATF agents years prior to all this. But as the second season rolls on, it becomes clear that the "death" strengthened the cult.

When a desperate Dorothy scours through old footage, she discovers she was the journalist covering the cult years ago. To everyone, it looked like May died. This left viewers wondering if the fact she's alive means May had powers to resurrect herself, or more likely, George used Leanne to bring her back the same way she did with baby Jericho. However, as more about the fire that engulfed the cult's residence is revealed, there are some clues that suggest the May existing right now as the cult's den mother isn't the one who returned from the dead.

As Dorothy rummages through her video archive even more so she can track Leanne down and recover the child she stole, new clips suggest May played them all. There are spots with people talking about resurrections within the cult, faith and belief, so as Dorothy goes about her detective work, it appears that May faked her death to trick the cult into thinking she's an agent of their dark god.

After all, Leanne worships the bible and believes in a prophet, and from the reactions of the cult who thought they lost May, this woman could be the messiah they believe in. Coming back to life would cement their trust in her, making May their version of Jesus Christ and allowing her a strong grip on their minds.

It would also explain why she, not George, gets Leanne to come home and why so many new cult members follow her blindly, from all walks of society. It's a rebirth for her and fits their religious ways because once the cult sees someone they loved come back to life, they'll go all in. This ties into why Leanne was skeptical of May in Season 1 and fled, as she might have had trust issues over the ruse. Regardless, May faking her death is the perfect way to get new members in, especially people who might have macabre talents like Leanne, which is May's ultimate goal.
